  • Is anyone at a loose end - need help finding Henry?

    Hi ya everyone - I've not been about for a while, but I am trying to have some me time and do my tree.

    I have come to a bit of a wall and I need a helpful wreaking ball.

    Ok, This is what I have so far.

    Henry Brown b.1857 (+/-1) married Mary Ann Donovan b.1859 (+/-1) 09 Jul 1881 St John the Evangelist, Walworth
    Daughter - Sarah Ann Brown b.1879 Bermondsey, Surrey
    Daughter - Jane Brown b.1885 Bermondsey, Surrey (Aka Agnes Jane Brown)
    Son - John Brown b.1891 Bermondsey, Surrey (listed as Jack in 1911)

    Henry's father according to marriage cert was Frederick Brown - deceased

    According to the 1911 census they had 10 children but only 3 were living.

    1911 - 13 Victory Place, Camberwell, London
    Henry, Mary Ann and Jack (John)
    1901 - 19 Victory Place, Camberwell, London
    Henry, Mary Ann, Sarah, Jane and John (Jack)
    1891 - 16 Suffolk Place, Bermondsey, Surrey
    Henry, Mary Ann, Sarah and Jane

    Henry's occupation is listed as Carman on the 1891 census through to the 1911 census.

    I have not been able to trace Henry or the family back any further. I have found Mary Ann with her parents in 1861 but nothing else.

    Any help will be very welcome

          The reference for 1891 is RG12; Piece: 370; Folio 43; Page 7

          The names have been mistranscribed

            I thought this would be the 1891 census which gives Henry's place of birth as Westminster.

              1911 - Surrey London
              1901 - Bermondsey

                  Don't you just love it when that happens.............

                  I don't know if it helps but I believe that this family were Roman Catholics

                    It might just be a coincidence but on the marriage certificate it gives Henry's address as 28 Henshaw Street.
                    In 1891 there is another Brown family living at that address - I wonder if they are related in some way - might be worth tracing them back a generation to see if you can find a link.

                    1891 census

                        Why do you think they were Catholic?

                          ~~~~Wave Back~~~~~
                          I found this one an ancestry too, It is one of my maybe's. There are a few other baptisms for Frederick and Sarah which I am trying to follow up see if they lead anywhere.
                          The reason I thought they might be RC is Henrys only surviving son John (Jack) listed his religion as RC on his Navy records
                            Just did some more digging looks like Henry baptised at Lambeth St. Mary was bapsited as an older child. about age 9. As I found the family on the 1861 census with Henry age 10.
                            Well at least it eliminates that one
