  • Record Office: Look up Marriage Victoria Australia

Hello. Would any one be able to look up a Marriage for me for the following Persons

William Lowden. to Elizabeth Jane Holgate. Date 1873.

Trying to find out Their father's Names. Sorry I do not know where in Victoria

    Thank you Tipples

    Hi Tipples.
Nominated parents for married couples are not listed on Index for the state of Victoria.
You would need to purchase their marriage cert, as their parents names "should" be listed.
If the Bride and Groom were adults ( over 21 ) when they married, then it was optional to list parents names.

    Married 1873 in Melbourne, Vic...Ref Number:11655

    However....
    Re: Elizabeth Jane Holgate
Elizabeth Jane LOWDEN ( Holgate ) died in the suburb of Dandenong ( outer Melbourne ) Victoria aged 66 Reg No 4529
Father registered on death Index was Benjamin HOLGATE...Mother Elizabeth WALLSER

Her birth/christening on Vic. Index is shown as 1851 Melbourne, Ref Number:17153 Parish:St James Melbourne, Cof E...Fath: Benjamin HOLGATE....Mother Elizabeth
Her Father Benjamin died in 1872 aged 63.. says born Lancs (poss Lancashire ) Father: Benjamin.... Mother: Mary Towers
A possible death for her mother Elizabeth HOLGATE.....was a death recorded in Richmond ( Melbourne ) aged 78 in 1889, Father listed as Samuel WALKER ( rather than WALLSER ) Mother Hannah Unknown Reg no:13883

    Re: William LOWDEN

There is a birth listed in 1855 Sandhurst ( now Greater Bendigo ) Victoria, for a William LOWDEN Father: John.... Mother: Eliza RYAN reg No.1165
But to confirm this is him,you would need to purchase William and Elizabeth Jane marriage cert....as there are a number of William LOWDEN deaths with parents "unknown" that could fit a birth circ.1850s

With the Victorian BMD records, you can usually purchase an image, in place of a certificate, if you don't need to have the information certified. The image is significantly cheaper than a certificate.

        This is the link:

Follow the link to Historical researchand then Search historical indexes
On the way you'll see other useful links to fee information etc.

You can deduce quite a bit from the free searches, if you're careful with the info you put in.

          Hi Tipples.

Just an update for you regarding William LOWDEN

As his wife Elizabeth Jane LOWDEN ( Holgate ) died in the City of Dandenong, outer Melbourne ( not to far from where i live ) i did a bit of searching,as it was quite possible William LOWDEN and wife Elizabeth Jane were living in this area....when Elizabeth died.

There is a burial listing for a William LOWDEN at Cheltenham Cemetery. There were two main cemeteries in this area ( Dandenong - Buninyong cem and Cheltenham cem )

          Burial listing:
          Name: William Lowden
          Age: 70
          Birth Date: abt 1844
          Death Date: 17 Jul 1914
          Cemetery: Cheltenham Old
          Cemetery Location: Cheltenham Old, Victoria

Melbourne Victoria death index dosent show a death for William LOWDEN in 1914.....but, there is a listing on index for a death of William "spelt" ( LOUDEN ) poss spelling error for (LOWDEN ) on Vic. Index
This death was also listed as Dandenong.( as was Elizabeth Jane LOWDEN )..so feel he is possibly your William LOWDEN.
List father as James and mother as Sarah HARVEY

          Death Victoria:
          Surname: LOUDEN
          Given Names: Wm
          Event: D
          Sex:
          Spouse Surname/Father: Louden Jas
          Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Sarah HARVEY
          Age: 70
          Age Code:
          Birth Place:
          Death Place: Dnong
          Year: 1914
          Reg. Number: 9314

His age at death gives him a birth circ. 1844

I noticed most of William and Elizabeth Jane LOWDEN ( Holgate ) children died in Victoria

The death of one son was a Benjamin Harvey LOWDEN aged 57 died 1932

So the middle name of "HARVEY" ties up with William LOWDEN/LOUDEN death 1914.... mothers surname ( Sarah HARVEY )

          Cheers
          Tony ( Melbourne Vic. )

            Thank you again Tony.
Yes most of the information does relate to William and Elizabeth. they did have a son Benjamin Henry. not Harvey. Born 1874 William was Born around 1840 to 44. No one is really sure about the correct year. But the parents name for William Lowden are not James and Sarah
William Parents were Joseph and Sarah. William Lowden was born in Ireland they arrived in England Cumberland and William when older emigrated to Victoria but do not know date. that is where he must have met Elizabeth Jane Holgate
You have done amazing things with this research. So good, that when I have all my other facts sorted. I may, if I may be so bold, ask for another look up. Thanks again Tipples

Someone, with a public user-name of "chris.loudon" has done a correction for the OCR of death notices in "The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Saturday 16 June 1917, page 13", specifically for:

I've just spotted (and corrected) these two (consecutive):
LOWDEN. -On the 20th July, 1917, at General
Hospital, Launceston, Malcolm Davis dearly be-
loved son of H W and A Lowden, aged 4 years
                        and 5 months
                        Deeply mourned.
LOWDEN. - On the 26th July, at Launceston, Tas-
mania, Malcolm Davis, loved only child of Harry
W and Ada Lowden, grandson of the late Mr.
and Mrs William Lowden, late of Brighton, Vic-
                        toria, aged 4 years.
from "The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Saturday 28 July 1917, page 13"

The printing is very smudgy - could be 260th, 26th or, even, 28th. I think 26th is the most likely.
