  • Question Re: administration

Shadrach Jones died in 1845 without a will, his wife Ann died in 1851. In 1866 their daughter & son in law took another son to court for their share of the estate. From what I can gather from the newspapers the son just took off with everything.

The judge made an order for administration in 1866.

Where can I find the admin order & in who's name would it be, Shadrach's or his wife?

    Any ideas please?

I'd guess that it would be in the wife's name - but there are some more expert heads on the forum who might spot your question and give you a more definitive reply.

Since the order was made after 1858 the Administration should be listed in the Probate Indexes on Ancestry. From that you can get a copy for £5 from York (or other Probate Offices, which apparently are quicker)

Don't hold your breath though, I have a couple of Administrations and they are just the bare facts, although if there was a big problem as you describe it could be different.

Notice I'm not volunteering to look for JONES!!! Good luck!

I have had a look at the Ancestry probate indexes but I can't find one in 1866 for an Ann Jones dying in 1851. It's difficult with not knowing where she died etc. However, to answer your first question, I did find one where the married daughter had claimed (in her name) and it said wife of .......

I would try post 1866 for both Shadrack & Ann.
I have a scenario where father died intestate, and then his wife died about a month later.
There were 2 applications for administation, made on the same day by the same daughter - one filed under father's name, another filed under mother's name.

Thank you. They died in Worcestershire where daughter & son in law lived. The son who had taken the estate lived just over the border in Herefordshaire. I have checked the ancestry probate register but no sign of Shadrach or Ann.

I will try in the childrens names, thank you all.
