I have an Eliza KNIGHT died 28/3/1848 two days after having a Baby she was buried on the 2/4/1848 St James Bermondsey
Baby Sophia died 27/3/1848 but she is not mentioned as buried with her Mother ??? is this usual??? as I cannot find a burial for her .

She may not have been buried with her mother as they may not have known the mother was going to die.

If the baby was not baptised then they may either have buried her on the churchyard perimeter, or with someone else who had just died, as was the custom back then - burying an unbaptised infant with someone who HAD been baptised would ensure that the devil could not harvest the soul of the baby and also that the baby stood a good chance of going to heaven, rather than purgatory.

No, they often buried the same day or the following day. To put it delicately, there was no refrigeration back then.
