  • Anyone care for a HOGAN hunt?

My only sighting of this family is in 1861
in a multiple occupancy dwelling at 9, St Lawrence, Newcastle on Tyne All Sts

    Patrick Hogan 49 Ireland
    Catherine 30 Ireland
    William 4 Newcastle
    Eleanor 2 Newcastle
    Robert 4m Newcastle

Patrick was a labourer in a manure factory
There were probable birth reg for all 3 children, N/Tyne Sep 1856 - Mar 1861

I can find no further trace of them:(

There is a tree on Ancestry for son William (William Patrick) showing emigration to the USA in the 1880’s. The tree suggests Catherine Hogan was nee Dunn.
It’s helped me find William Hogan, wife & infant daughter Catherine in Gateshead in 1881.

Can anyone find any info about the rest of the family, please?

    Thanks,
    Jay

          Brilliant, Elaine - you're a star.

Thankyou so much - I did find a couple of possible death regs for Catherine 1861 - 1871, so widower fits nicely.
Oh dear, if that's William - who's been a naughty boy then??

                Thanks again Elaine

I think I have Eleanor paired up with Thomas A Straughan in 1891.
                (28 Leazes Crescent, N/Tyne)

or perhaps not, that lady says she was born in Alnwick????

Thankyou so much, Elaine - the confirmation of the surname Dunn is brilliant.:D

It would appear that Mrs Hogan was the sister of gt-gdma Julia Dunn, who by 1861 was Mrs Julia McDonough, living in the same multiple occupancy residence as the Hogans.

What a wonderful night's work you've put in Elaine!

Just updating, incase anyone with these surnames comes across the thread by googling.

Eleanor Hogan did indeed marry Thomas Straughan (a different one! a coal miner) and in 1881 they lived in Cowpen, Blyth. Eleanor's brother Robert & sister Sarah lived with them.

This morning I discovered Sarah Hogan married Robert Mather in 1883. They lived in Cowpen and had several children, including Isabella Mather. Isabella was already on my tree - in Dec 1911 she married Michael Mcdonough, grandson of my gt-gdparents Michael McDonough & Julia nee Dunn.
In 1911 Isabella & Mick were both living with Mick's aunt - Isabella was recorded as "cousin." I couldn't find a blood connection and had thought this might have been a euphamism, an alternative to visitor.

However, as Isabella's grandma Catherine Hogan & Mick's grandma Julia McDonough were sisters, and their daughters Sarah Mather & Margaret Drummond first cousins, then "cousin" has turned out to explain a blood connection after all.

I am truly grateful to the originator of the Ancestry tree who named the mother of William Hogan as Catherine DUNN - that made me want to check things out and find out more.
