  • War Loan

    Hi

Can anyone tell me what a War Loan is? and how can I find out about them? what info can I find in the war loan?

People who lent money to the government for the war should hold a War Stock certificate, and you should find the current market price of these in the Financial Times. Although whilst they are traded, they are unlikely to ever get repaid (especially now!).

Is that what you were referring to?

My mum had war bonds. They were more or less the same as National Savings Certificates or Bonds but sold to finance the war effort, to make people feel they were "doing their bit", I think they were sold between the wars as well as during both World WarS
UPDATE - Apparently some of what mum had were "Post War Credits" which were issued in WW2 and were repaid after the war whilst the earlier (about 1917) War Loans were never repaid.
