  • Wise family to Australian in late 1800s

We are now trying to find details on the siblings of my great great grandmother Eunice Wise who married Charles Frederick Basing in 1866. Some of the info may be on our other thread titled Charles Basing marriage in 1851, but in essence, we have the following info on the siblings of Eunice Wise and would love to have some assistance on where we may find more info to complete that part of the family tree for Eunice, sorry about the bulk of info, not sure how else to show what we have to date- any help to enlarge on what we have would be greatly appreciated.

John Wise – father of Eunice. Appears on 1841 census with his wife Mary, and in the 1851 census his wife is Elizabeth. We have been told by another family member that Mary died 1846 in the second quarter but no date known, and we can find no record. John then married Elizabeth, children born by her were Josiah c1844, William Henry c1847 and then Elizabeth died 1851, obviously after the census, on which she appears, but neither William Henry or Josiah appears as part of the family. John then married Susannah with family name of Matten or Hatten or similar, and William Henry appears with them at this census, but not Josiah, .and no evidence for any of these occurrences that we can find, although we found Susannah on the 1861 census with John, but no marriage record found,

Anne Wise, was with the family on the 1841 census, but not the 1851 census. We have been told she married David Houghton in Buckden Huntingdonshire, and died 1909 in Corindap Victoria Australia. We can find no marriage for her, no record of her and her husband David Houghton arriving Australia, and no other information on any children, death details, or any details of her husband, in England or in Australia

Thomas Wise - a marriage to Mary Ann Brown found for us but now found an LDS entry of marriage of Thomas Wise, but spelled Wyse, to Mary Bell on 14th November 1850 at Leighton Bromswold in Huntingdonshire that matched info given us by cousin who claimed the Bell name has figured among her early ancestors, found a Thomas Wise and Mary Bell with the birth of Emily Wise in Victoria 1866 but only LDS entry can be found of their marriage, found the death record of Thomas 1907 and Mary 1885 in Victoria.

Joseph Wise aged 8 on the 1841 census, aged 17 at the 1851 census, not found on the 1861 census, no record of him on shipping lists but believed to have migrated to Australia

William Wise, aged 6 at 1841 census, aged 15 at 1851 census, found him as passenger with Eunice arrived Geelong 16th August 1856 on the ship Omega from Southampton, aged 19, he was shown as aged 21 on arrival. We cannot find anything further on William Wise after his arrival in Australia on that ship.

We have found John Wise after the 1851 census, but only in the 1881 and 1891 census when John, aged 50, and his wife Ann age 43 are living in Kensington , in Bedfordshire, he is working as a Day Gardener. Have found no children for John and Ann, nor could we find a marriage record for them, and no record after this census or of their death, nor any record in the 1861 and 1871 census.

Jonah Wise aged 7 on the 1851 census appears to have moved to New Zealand at some time, as he is also not shown on the census after an entry placing him in the Union Workhouse Saint Johns Huntingdonshire as an inmate and farm labourer at the 1861 census. We then have a record of him arriving Australia 30th March 1864 from Otago NZ on the ship City of Hobart, and it appears he was a witness at the wedding of his older sister Eunice on 11th July 1866 in Geelong Australia, but nothing else can be found of where he went, what he did, was he married, did he have children after that date.

We can find no details of the Josiah Wise who was born c1844 or of William Henry Wise born c1847 (except his entry on the 1861 census) at any site that we have accessed.

      Hi LittleLila

Do you have an ancestry sub ?

There are several hits on family trees and Australian Electoral Rolls for David Houghton and Thomas Wise, and Jonah Wise. Also birth index entries for a Joseph James Jonah Wise with father Thomas. As the Victorian indexes are also pay per view, you should weigh up which will be cheaper to check out the entries.

You could also go to your local library where they have the family history section and look up the Victorian BDM microfiche - sometimes when looking for a whole family it is quicker than on-line. Your local fh library may also have free ancestry access, some of them do offer it to library members.

The Australian Electoral Rolls can be really helpful as you can track down others of the same name at the same address or in the same electorate, or even scan the pages of the whole electorate.

CORINDHAP is a small town south of Ballarat in Victoria.

A good free site for Australian information is the Australian Newspapers on-line through the National Library.

You can put in your Wise family names and limit by newspaper (The Argus, Melbourne Paper, probably) and then family notices, then dates, if you know when people died, and sometimes pick up a death or funeral notice. There are entries for Joseph James Josiah Wise, who apparently died in 1924 in Canberra, although his wife is described as living in Toorak, Melbourne. There are lots of hits for WISE BALLARAT.

This is the only death for a Mary Wise in Hunts between 1841 and 1851, so it could well be Mary. However, the index doesn't show ages at that date, so you'd need the cert to get her age and address.

        Deaths Jun 1846
        Wise Mary Huntingdon 14 129

Ann's marriage and date of birth are on the IGI; it's a submitted entry, which means it was provided by a member of the LDS church rather than being a transcription from the Parish Records, but as it gives precise dates and places, there's a reasonable chance that it's accurate (which submitted entries aren't always):

          Ann Wise
          Female

          Event(s):
          Birth: 05 NOV 1828

          Parents:
          Father: John Wise
          Mother: Mary Haudling

          Marriages:
          Spouse: David Houghton
Marriage: 12 NOV 1847 Buckden, Huntingdon, England

              Births Jun 1843
              WYSE Jonah Huntingdon 14 197

Jonah must be Mary's son, in view of his birth date.

William Henry was Susannah's child, not John's:

In 1851, Susannah Mattin was an unmarried servant, living in Bedfordshire.

Her son William Henry was with his grandmother, also called Susannah Mattin, in Easton, Hunts.

                      Possible death for Susannah:

                      Deaths Sep 1890
                      Wise Susannah 70 St. Neots 3b 153

Susannah (right age and birthplace) is living alone in Ellington in 1881, calling herself a widow:

Thank you Diane for the assistance, we do belong to our local library and can access Ancestry there, we have problems with that access, our computers have always be Mac, and we find so many problems when we go to the library and access Ancestry as it is a PC based system, and is so slow compared to a Mac, takes us forever to get a screen change and we find that our time, which is related to who else is waiting to use the computers, is limited, so every time we go, we end up with perhaps a couple of pages, but we will persevere this week, perhaps make a few trips, and get more stuff from their free access on the family, we are determined to put this family tree together as it will round of more than 40 years of research once we have the stuff on the siblings of my great great grandmother- this stuff is definately habit forming and becomes an obsession to get it all done.

It is VERY habit forming - I don't spend hours on Facebook but I do spend hours trawling the historical newspapers - prize-winning veges, obits of very early residents, bankrupts, will challenges, divorces, drownings, wife-beaters, even a murder-suicide, we have it all.

I started before much was online - the NSW BDM indexes were, but nothing else. I used to go to the library and go through the Victorian microfiche and even printed off the pages to bring home, and thats still a viable, cheaper option than paying the Vic BDMS. I like them because you can see the whole surname over a couple of pages and pick up variations in spelling and name very quickly.

You can also go to a larger library (State Library in Sydney, and so probably in Brisbane, if you are able) and look at the old Electoral Rolls. You might be able to look up one or two, if Ancestry at the library is slow, and then go to the bigger library and look at the microfiche versions - its slower again, but you can take all the time you need and its free. For early ones you need to know the electoral district, as there are no indexes, so if you get that from Ancestry, its a lot easier (you could do that much from home).

                                Happy hunting

I have now been to my library and accessed the Ancestry site for free, and been getting lots of stuff about the Wise family in Victoria, which is where they all went to when they arrived in australia. Still having so many problems though with the Wise family in england, most likely because I just dont know where to look, or not putting the data in the right place to get sensisible answers, or in most case, any answer at all.
I have a series of questions about Wise in England, would somebody tell me the best site to go to for the answers

What info I am seeking about Wise in England

                                  1. Date and place of marriage of John Wise to Mary Mardling/ (in whichever spelling her name was) in 1827
                                  2. Mary Mardling/Maudling/Mordling place and date of birth and name of parents
                                  3. Did John marry Elizabeth, where and what date, and what is her maiden name
                                  4. Where did Elizabeth die and when in 1851
                                  5. Thomas and Mary Wise had children Martha and one less than 1 year old, when they arrived Australia in June 1853, where were those children born and when, and what was name of baby less than 1 year
                                  6. Why cant we find John Wise who was aged 10 at the 1851 census on any other census until we found him at the 1881 census , aged 40, employed in the household of Mary Brown, as was Annie Wise age 33, presumably his wife, working as a domestic servant
                                  7. Why cant we find any marriage for John and Annie, we have checked every year from his age 17 in 1868 right up to 1881 and can find no marriage and no children born to John and Annie.
                                  8. We can find no entry after the 1891 census for John and Annie, no death record or any other record after the 1891 census.
                                  9. why cant we find any entry for Joseph Wise (age 17 in 1851) after the 1851 census, not found on shipping lists, census, marriage, or death.
                                  10. why cant we find any record for David Houghton and Ann nee Wise on shipping lists, we were told they went to Australia and she died in 1909 at Corindhap Victoria that year, but no ship or date of travel found.
                                  11. We found (with help of this site) Jonah Wise travel from NZ to Australia 1864 – but when did he go to NZ, he was on 1851 census and 1861 census, but then nothing till he arrived Australia 30th March 1864.on ship City of Hobart from Otago.
