A Gummer was a person who repaired/improved old saws, by deepening the cuts in them...........

I found this description by googling Val, but don't know if it will have any relevence to a 'Gum Picker'

The enumerator (or someone) has writted the word "Glue" after Gum Picker, so maybe it was part of the process of glue making.

Well I've pretty much exhausted it for the time being Val, as I seem to have gone as far as I can go on most of my lines, I usually just pay to go, as and when I need.

I see her mother was a match box maker. I wonder if she was employed in the same industry? Glue or gum was used as binding to make the matches, and in constructing the boxes.

I noticed that it said Glue in feint writing by the enumerator, it might have been horse glue that they used which does harden very quickly, so required pickers to get it collected quickly?
