    The 1881 record is here: RG11 piece 3861 folio 66 page 33
He shows up as 44 - i.e. possibly born 1836-7, rather than 1837-8. DO you have a reason for the very specific "1838" as YoB?

I see what you mean: both described as "boarders" in what is, otherwise, the HOOKES's household. And his marital status is unspecified.

Other instances of William KENDRICK in the earlier censuses, seem to have been born anywhere but Liverpool, don't they! Warwickshire, Wales, Ireland...

Incidentally, at 5 years of age, John BLACKBURN would have been born 1875-6, rather than 1877.

Having said that, the only 1871-1881 registration in Bury for that name was 1879 q2.

John was born 1877 Rossendale which in near Bury his mother was Mary ann Blackburn nee Howarth
father on cert Alfred Blackburn but he was a L.D.S and was in U.S.A and re-married before john born
cant find Mary in any census after 1871
            John appears in 1901/1911
This is a thick plot to get into LOL

If you have a look on this site: http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

there's a death in Rossendale for Mary Ann BLACKBURN, aged 40, in 1876. That would give her YoB as 1835-6.

I can't find the same death in the GRO index - not just that it doesn't seem to appear in the FreeBMD listing, but I've looked at the four relevant images for the year, and can't see the expected entry.

I can't remember when they started imposing fines for late registration, but it was sometime around then. Perhaps John really was born earlier than his registration suggests, but they recorded his birth as later than actual to avoid a penalty? Perhaps Mary Ann died in childbirth?

The marriage of Alfred BLACKBURN to Mary Ann seems a bit elusive as well. I can't see it in the GRO index, or on LancsBMD.

                EDIT:
Ahhh. Found it. He wasn't just "Alfred" then!
                1867 q3 BLACKBURN Alfred Augustus A L & HAWORTH Mary Ann
                in Bury District.

In LancsBMD: Alfred Augustus Albert Lamb BLACKBURN. At Emmanuel Church, Holcombe.
The IGI has had a field day: various places of birth for him, though the consensus seems to rely on 1871 and has "Newton-le-Willows" (even if they can't get the spelling to match the expected UK version). Presumably that's because of the LDS connection. Both wives get a mention, too. Intriguing disparity of DoD, though! 1916 and 1934 - and did I also see 1910?

We have got marriage cert and mary ann's birth cert
but Alfred left uk well before John was born ib 1877 but she placed Alfred a father
but trying to find John or his mum in 1891 is a mystery
John does appear in1901/1911 married with his family
we were told by a Blackburn L.D.S that our John was not the son of Alfred this is why we think it was William Kendrick as he appears with him 1881 and in he Salford 1871 this is were mary was born so they may have mwwt there after 1871
Mary passed away in Manchester area

And this could be him on the 1851 census, living at 77 Burlington Street, Liverpool
                      Thomas Kibeck (unsure) - Head - Married - 30 - Tailor - Islington, Middlesex
                      Mary Kibeck - Wife - Married - 30 - Liverpool, Lancs
                      Henry Kibeck - Son - 5 - Scholar - Liverpool
                      Jane Latham (or Lutham) - Visitor - Married - 36 - Liverpool
                      Thomas Latham - Son - 6 mths - Liverpool
                      William Kendrick - Step Son - 13 - Office Boy - Liverpool
                      Link

That is the only William Kendrick, born about 1838 in Liverpool I can find in 1851. Only problem is, who was his mother, Mary or Jane?
Perhaps somebody with a better eye for 19th century handwriting can have a look at these for you and confirm spelling!

Looks like the 1851 Census may be your William,

1841 Census - Burlington Street, Liverpool
William Kendrick - 25 - Hair Dresser - Born in Lancs
Jane Kendrick - 26 - Born in Lancs
William Kendrick - 3 - Born in Lancs
                        Link

So Jane was Williams mother! (And at last, a Census Return I Can Read!)

                          The IGI has a christening for William;

William Kendrick, s/o William & Jane Kendrick, c. 15 March 1838, St Peter, Liverpool

                          Also;
Hannah Kendrick, d/o William & Jane Kendrick, c. 09 May 1836, St Peter, Liverpool
Albert Kendrick, s/o William & Jane Kendrick, c. 14 January 1840, St Peter, Liverpool
John Kendrick, s/o William & Jane Kendrick, c. 04 October 1841, St Peter, Liverpool

And also a marriage for Edward Latham to Jane Kendrick - 16 November 1846 @ St Peter, Lancaster (Link). Jane's father was James Carey.

William & Jane married on 13 october 1834, @ St Peter, Liverpool (Link)

There are three William Kendrick's who died between 1841-1851 at Liverpool on the freebmd site. Of the 3, only William Kendrick who died during the March 1846 Quarter is the only one after John's christening, and before Jane's second marriage. But that is only for Liverpool, and does not include Lancaster, where the family may have moved to.

Family name of Head should be KIBERD - see same family in 1861. Also the occupation, originally entered as "mariner" was crossed out and replaced by "Tailor" - it really does look like a T - but in 1861 he's a master mariner!

On another thread, someone remarked on how many men in Liverpool appeared to be Tailors. Someone else replied that they were probabl;y Sailors!

Seems very likely, see Christine's post #15.
