  • 1894 Divorce - Murphy/Stewart

I am researching the Jenner family who lived at Avebury Manor, Wiltshire.
Leonora Helen Gertrude Stewart (b: 1869 Cheltenham) married Leopold Jenner in 1899.

I thought her first husband: Samuel Joseph F B O'Neill Murphy had died. However, I've now heard there was a divorce in 1894 - one year after a baby girl, Nora, was born.

I've not been able to find this divorce anywhere. Does anyone have any tips as to how I could track it down please? Many thanks.

Interesting divorce, there is no co-respondent named, so divorce not on the grounds of adultery by the wife. Wonder what on earth he divorced her for?

If you look on The Times online and search for O'Neill Murphy there are some pieces about him suing the British Vice Consul in Dieppe for libel after his manservant was beaten up & later died following a fracas when O'Neill Murphy was denied entry to a casino, and in 1901 Leonoara suing him for £4883 owed in maintenance.

That was a quick look up Jill, well done. Can I be cheeky here and ask if someone would mind checking for a divorce for me please? I am completely flumoxed by A2A so hardly bother using it.

There's a report on The Gale newspapers of an 1894 divorce which gives a lot of detail. The only thing that's confusing me are the names. The wife is quoted as Mrs Murphy, the daughter of Field Marshal Sir Donald Stewart and he is Mr J J B O'Neil Murphy "a gentleman of fortune". Is this the right couple?

Here's the marriage (British Libraries newspaper site)

"The marriage of Mr S O’Neill Murphy of 36 St James St and County Antrim, Ireland and Nora, youngest daughter of General Sir Donald Stewart, Bart of 73 Harrington Gardens, was solemnized on July 22nd [1891] at the Royal Bavarian Roman Catholic Chapel by the Right Rev Monsignor Talbot. Owing to the bride and groom being in deep mourning only the immediate family were present."

Here's the chapel in our places of worship under Westminster St James

Well it must be the same case then. There's a lot of quite lurid detail. The marriage was clandestine and her parents didn't know about it.

                        The main article is here

The Standard (London, England), Tuesday, August 07, 1894; pg. 6; Issue 21870

If you can't access it, let me know and I can forward a copy

Am I correct that the reason for the divorce was that the groom preferred, ahem, his valet to his wife?

Jackie - Yes please I would really really be so grateful! We are researching Nora for Avebury Manor and I don't think anyone has turned up what you have. Really fantastic. I am very new to the forum and a member told me about it when I was on NT Guiding duty last Sunday. How does forwarding work? Do I put my email address here or what? Many thanks again!

No far from it - the grounds were his "cruelty and misconduct". He preferred his (female) masseuse and another woman he "had been acquainted with" before the marriage plus it seems other women. He hoped his wife would either die, go mad or commit suicide and seemed to make no secret of his other relationships

You will have to order the actual divorce from TNA, it's easy if you use the link on this thread. Unless of course, you are happy with the newspaper extracts, which may be sufficient for your purpose.

Jackie will click on your name which will enable her to send you a private message on this forum, or exchange emails. Don't post your email address on this thread.

Oh, that's my imagination running wild!

A most unusual divorce - women needed two reasons for divorcing a husband, infidelity AND something else. She must really have wanted rid of him.
