    Hi All

Could some one please tell what is meant when the mothers maiden name listed has two names recorded. For example "SMITH or JONES".

This entry is for a birth in 1972 ?

    Many Thanks

      Hi, Welcome to FTF.
Two names means the mother was married before and one name is her maiden name the other her previous married name. It could also mean that she used another name but not necessarily married.

it might be that the mother isnt married but the children have been registered in their fathers names, so both names, the mothers and the fathers would be registered. ie Mr. Smith and Miss. Jones, so the child would be registered as John Smith but also as John Jones.
