Occasionally a registration doesn't make it into the GRO index for one reason or another - probably someone copying one thing into another and missing an entry. Although my great-aunt definitely exists and my mum's certain which year she was born, she isn't in the index. It might be worth contacting the relevant RO to check their records.

Sorry we don't know, it gets a little complicated, Sidney is my father-in-laws maternal father, however when his girlfriend Phyllis Parker was expecting, In 1931 Sidney attempted to kill her by knocking her out and putting her across some railway lines expecting a train he hit her, luckily she regained conscious and managed to struggle to a local farmer. Sidney stood trial but due to his age (17) was sentenced to 18 months, following his release he was sent to Australia by his rich parents for a while. We know that Sidney's father owned a warehouse in Preston and at the time of the offence live in Princess Crescent Bare Morecambe. Naturally my father-in-law does not want to talk about him. We did manage to find newspaper cuttings from our local library about he case that was reports in the local newspaper, but there was no mention of his mum.

Hi Rob - have you got / seen a copy of your father-in law's birth cert? Won't that state who your father-in-law's parents were? (Hoping I've not misunderstood your last post!)

Sidney never married Phyllis and as far as I know Sidneys name is not on the birth certificate. I will look at Sydney Duxbury Horfall thanks. Birth date 1914 is about right as it gave his age as 17 at the time of the offence.

It might also be worth looking at the 1911 to see if there are any rich factory owning Horsfalls in the area!

Despite minor disagreements from the OH I am convinced that he was NOT born in Morecambe or Preston but as some of your suggestions elsewhere, but who am I to disagree with the boss

Success at last, well sort off managed to find his grave and got some interesting info on it, His mum & dad were Herbert & Nellie Horsfall and his grandmother was Annie Mercy Horsfall, she died 8 Jan 1920 aged 58. She had at least one other son Edgar who died 5 October 1920. Sidney was in the RAF Photographic Unit Sqdn Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and went missing 4 December 1914, he was married to Stella.

There is this marriage for a Herbert Horsfall
                                  Herbert Horsfall
Year of Registration: 1913 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
                                  Spouse's Surname: Nellie Burton
District: Bradford County: Yorkshire - West Riding, West Yorkshire
                                  Volume: 9b Page: 317

So I would say that birth I found for Sydney E Horsfall in Bradford is their son and I think the one you are looking for. Plus those other 2 in Lancashire.

Sydney E Horsfall married Stella Battersby 1939 Bournemouth 2b 3157

(And Sydney Duxbury Horsfall married Joan somebody or other, in Preston, so that's him out of the equation.)
