i know they're not excellent photos, but any thoughts on the era of the man? im told the painting dates to the 18th century, and is said to be spanish, conquistador in fact.
the shoes make me think it might be early 18th century, maybe 17th?
taking a look at the picture, he is wearing a ruff, which they seemed to have stopped wearing by 1625. they started the silk handkerchiefs by that time, as evidenced by the portrait of the duke of buckingham. also in the 1820's they seemed to start using boots, not shoes. the painting has either a large lip or some sort of lace on his shoes? these seem to indicate "rose shoes", which places this portrait around 1610. theres also the place it was painted. it looks english to me, which may fit with the fashions, but its french or spanish it may be different. he seems to have a flag, and it looks like he may be a standard bearer. for the army or a royal palace maybe? any ideas?
