my parents divorced when I was 5, he remarried in 1976, died in 1985. his 2nd wife is still living. I had no contact with him but would like to obtain his army records, he was is Malaya in the 50's. Can I send for his records? I've looked on the site here, would I apply as not the immediate next of kin and without the consent of immediate next of kin or are the immediate next of kin or who are applying without the next of kins consent ? thanks

I don't have enough experience to be certain - but I believe that the forms would make it pretty clear whether or not you were eligible to receive them. I suspect that you might have problems, though, because of the intervening divorce, and the living widow.

I am in the process of doing this at the moment, there are various rules around deceased service personnel, when they died and who was their next of kin at that time. It starts with their partner, then oldest child and so on. If they divorced before he died then that could make you next of kin.
For definitive guidance and forms go to the MOD website homepage, then select researchers, then service records of deceased service personnel all the info and forms are there.
Depending on your next of kin status you may have to pay a £30 which is non-returnable if teh search draws a blank.
Good luck.Life's a journey not a destination.

We received a letter today, thanking us for our enquiry, and informing us that due to a high number of welfare requests there will be a significant delay in completing our search....
Disappointing but at least they have let us know. Our's is an army search, so I don't know if the other services are affected in the same way. I will keep everyone posted on progress when we hear something more positive.Life's a journey not a destination.

Well it arrived a week or so ago, but some of it is very hard to understand, the copy quality is very poor.Life's a journey not a destination.

I am now in mid de-code of all the abbreviations, it is an interesting journey finding out about someone I knew so well. Does anyone know where I can find a list of Ministry of Labour employment catagories and work codes?Life's a journey not a destination.
