  • Searching census by place/name

I'm just trying to do this as efficiently as I can and wondered if I was going about it the right way!

I'm starting by putting in the surname and the place, then ticking the "match all terms exactly" box.

I'm going to start in 1901 (22 possibles) and work backwards. How does this sound?

Is there a better way of doing it?

    Cheers
    Just Mandy

Are you using the old search or the new search? if the new then try the old search.
click on search and select search all records then on the right hand side below the grey bar click on old search.
put in the surname and search in the results click on 1901 then scroll down and enter the place you want in keyword(s)

I'm using Ancestry Mike - I have no idea if it is old or new!

      How do I know?

Click on SEARCH on the navigation bar, and select SEARCH RECORDS

At the right hand side of the screen (under the nav bar) you will see the words Go to New Search (if you are currently on the old search method) - or Go to Old Search (if you are currently using the new search method).
Personally I always use the old search method, making sure that the exact matches box is ticked.

It seems odd that I am struggling to do it in the same way I have been for the 1841 - is there a reason this should be different?

I prefer to use the "Old Search" all the time for all records .
on your home page just press search on the top line that goes
Home Family Trees Search Collaberate etc.
You should then load the search page and on the right hand side
              Go to new search

              Hope that helps
