HELP with opening a file ??

Somebody has sent me a copy of a letter which wont open ? it goes to microsoft works ? but says the file is missing or corrupt ?
I am dying to read this letter its really important to me .
Can somebody open it if I send it to them then send it back to me ??? please

It's the bit at the end after the dot.

eg. .jpg .png .zip

I dont have a dot I dont think ?? when I click on properties it says its a gif image in microsoft its a com/ya file ????
