  • Desperately seeking Sarah Fogg

    Hi All

Now, I've tried to search her before, but looking for Sarah Fogg c 1796 (probably Ashbourne Derbyshire).

She had at least two children illigitimately and I have all of them traced forward through the census and to death.

I have no idea of her parentage at all. There are however, other trees available on Ancestry and I'm in touch with a member on there (and here) who has what is seemingly a parallel family.

I thought I would attempt to try to piece all the Ashbourne Foggs together - there are not that many of them in the long run, but need a bit of a pointer as to where to start and how to keep track of who I've used and who I've not!!

Any suggestions before I get started?

    Thanks all
    Just Mandy

I would suggest you tackle it as a sort of one name study. Just find all the Foggs that you can and create a new FOGG ONLY file in Family Tree Maker - and make up mini trees for each of the Fogg families you find. At some point you may find that meet up, in which case you can "attach" one Fogg family to the other.

I would suggest you systematically work through the census and then try to fill in information from parish records if they available - hopefully as you add the info you should be able to build up each family separately.

      Thanks Elaine

I've started off with a tree of a contact - finding out who they have - and I'm on a roll of wallpaper on the kitchen table!!!

Once I can see where she has been, then I'm going to go back and look at who ISN'T in either of our trees...I know it sounds a bit long winded - but I can see every single person this way lol

In terms of systematically working through the census - how do you do that for a specific place? Search the name and place only? I'm not sure - doesn't take much to confuse me!

I'd just pick a person, and look for them through the census. usually if you have a name and pob then they should all be grouped towards the top in the search results.

        does that make sense?

Yes it does - once I have done this - and I won't be too long I guess, I will get onto that. I have a list of their Foggs in a word doc and as I put them in the tree am highlighting! Then, I'm going to put into FTM whilst sourcing - Probably starting with George!!!

A roll of wallpapers is a good way of starting - as you say, you can see everyone in that way.

Just pick one person, or family group, at a time and follow them through each census - making a note on your wallpaper where and when you found them! When they have disappeared from the family you can then check for marriages or deaths .. or just moving out!

I'm inclined to think that the wallpaper is working! I am getting more of a feel for the families - and its how I started years ago!!

I will shout again when I start matching up - knowing how EASY (ahem) my research yesterday was - I can guarantee I'll need help!!

OK - I have my wallpaper all charted!

I have serious suspicions that my Sarah Fogg is the sister of Edward Fogg b 1786 Ashbourne. I have not yet found siblings for him, but his parents are Edward Fogg b 1753 Ashbourne and Ann Cotton.

I'm going to start - somewhere!

                    OK -

I have started searching for Edward Fogg b 1786 Ashbourne. All I can find which is VAGUELY connected (even with 5+/- either side of the dob is a possible death in 1875 - if he was born in 1781!

I'm going to bring it forward and start somewhere else (knew I should have started with George!) but if anyone would like to try!! Too early I suspect :(

I don't suppose any of those have a brother called Edward do they?! LOL
