  • Help reading occupation please!

OK - don't faint because I'm doing research!

Can anyone read the occupation of John Robert Sherwood?

    Thanks

    ?? pulley shop

First letter of 1st word is a P, I think! It matches the P of Patrict Sweeney listed about half way down the page.

The only thing I can think of is being involved with pulley blocks which were used in block printing.

I think pulley shop is fine - why do they insist on those blinking great black strikes through words?!

Ah - so he could have been assisting the first - or doing the second maybe.

Plater looks more likely, though I can't think why they'd need a plater to make pulleys.

Pulley blocks and printers' blocks are chalk and cheese. I think he perhaps made the steel plates that formed the sides of metal pulley blocks.

I think he was what might now be called a sweeper-up. There seem to have been a wide variety of factories and brickworks.
