If he was wounded badly enough for it to have resulted in being discharged it may have been reported in newspapers local to his area. They are often the best source of this type of information if you don't have pension records from Ancestry
As you know the date of his wounding and his Medal Card records him as 1st Battalion - you could download the battalion War Diary from the NA
The official archive of the UK government. Our vision is to lead and transform information management, guarantee the survival of today's information for tomorrow and bring history to life for everyone.
Whilst it is highly unlikely he will be mentioned by name you may be able to find out some basic details of what they were engaged in at the time
If you plan a trip to Kew at any time you can inspect the original medal rolls for the Silver War Badge he was granted on discharge - they are not available online - and MAY give you a little more info than you already have - but not guaranteed - so possibly not worth a special journey unless you want to cover all bases
Interesting that Ernest was a Lance Corporal at the time of his entitlement to the 1914-15 Star - but seems to have received the British and Victory Medals as a Private - so this is likely to have been his rank on discharge
Good Luck
Sue
