  • Record Office: Isle of Wight... burial c. 1845

Please could someone check burials for Whippingham / East Cowes between 1841 and 1851.?
I believe the Record Office has surname index cards to help with date.
Searching for burial of Thomas SHEATH, a blacksmith, possibly b, abt 1775.
His wife Jane is a widow in 1851.

    Many thanks.

The Isle of Wight FHS have transcribed BMDs

The closest I can get is a Thomas Shafe - year of death 1845 - age 60 - Cowes district

which probably equates to this this entry in freeBMD
    Thomas Shafe
    1845 Oct-Nov-Dec
    District: Isle of Wight
    Volume: 8

Hampshire Advertiser & Salisbury Guardian (Southampton, England), Saturday, December 27, 1845; pg. 8; Issue 1168.[I] 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

-sorry it's not a particularly good image.

        Thank you Elaine.
        That looks most promising.

As there doesn't seem to be a GRO reference to correspond with the death reported in the paper, I think that the SHAFE reference could be 'my' Thomas.

        Many thanks.

There are two distinct families on the Island. SHEATH & SHEAF.

Make sure you are following the right one!

I did some research for a friend and got in a muddle with these two names.

PLEASE SCAN AT 300-600 DPI FOR RESTORATION PURPOSES. THANK YOU!

Thank you for that Wendy. It's always good to have local input about names.

Some years ago, when I was just starting out researching, I did go to Newport and looked through their card index and some filmed registers.

I think SHEATH is the Island's equivalent of SMITH.

I rang the register office this morning and was told that the 1845 December Quarter death which Elaine found for a Thomas SHAFE, shows him to be 66, which is about right for the one I'm seeking, so I'm going to have to take a chance that the cert. contains enough to link him to the correct family.
I note from the newspaper article that he is likely to have died by '...a visitation by God '....!
