  • Joseph Gillespie McKenzie

Please could somebody help find details of the above gentleman. He is the father of an elderly friend (84) and all we know is that Joseph was illegitimate and was in the Highland Light Infantry and had Glasgow connections.

Iain has been to Kew but is stumped by computers and only have a very dodgy Internet connection at the moment.

Any help would be much apprieciated.

There is a Joseph G McKenzie death registered

      1959 aged 81
      District: Liverpool North
      Vol:10d
      page:290

and a census for 1901 which might be him:

His marriage cert would confirm his Fathers name/occ and his birth would confirm his mother.

      same family in 1891:

      and again in 1881:

I think the illegitimate was family lore, the death could be him as Iain and his wife were trying to equate it with him coming home from the Korean war.

Are you saying that he was in the Korean war - early 1950s?
The death that Julie found in 1959 was for someone who was 81 years of age at the time of death, so unlikely to be the right one.

I think I may have found him.

Joseph Gillespie McKenzie born 5 March 1892 at 15 Breadalbane St Glasgow.
                Mother Helen McKenzie, Underclothing Machinist.
                Entry is marked as illegitimate.

There is an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries dated Nov 1895 where Helen applied to the Sherriff Court to have Joseph Binnie Gillespie, Painter, residing at 17 Regent Moray St Glasgow declared as the father. It was found in her favour. Helen was then living at 39 Pembroke St Glasgow.

                Hope this helps.

Thank-you so very much Sheila, Iain will be thrilled. My connection to the Internet is so intermittent that I can't get to grips with his family from here in France.

Sorry Di, been out all day and just about to go out again - this festival of ours really exacts a toll sometimes!! And I'm working, not just enjoying myself.

I hope to visit the Scottish Records Office sometime in September and will try for a birth of Helen and some other census sightings but sister Elizabeth was possibly born at an inconvenient time if the family were in Ireland when she put in an appearance as she seems to have been born around 1871!! I'll see what I can do.

That would be wonderful. Iain was thrilled with what you had found, but his wife has warned me that his brain is starting to go and when I tried explaining that the family must have moved around a bit with one born in Argyllshire, one in Glasgow and one in Ireland he was lost! Milly his wife tell me has talked about Izzie before.
