  • India birth certificate

    Hello all

Can somebody help me order an India birth cert please?
I have ordered a marriage cert in the past but I have forgotton how I did it.

The birth is for a Caroline Emily Webb born 14th of September 1908 in Jhansi, Bengal India.
I cant remember how to get the info to input into the online cert ordering website.

    Any help would be great.

If you are ordering from the GRO then click on overseas certificate on the first page. You will find the subsequent pages are different to the pages for requesting English/Welsh certs.
Have you got the reference from the Overseas BMDs?

      Hiya Elaine

That's the thing I don't know where I can get the reference details for the birth. The birth was given to me by the niece of Caroline and then I confirmed it by find the exact same details on the pilot search on IGI.

I can´t see the entry in the OverseasBMDs which means it is unlikely the GRO can help.
        Was this an army family?

IGI isn´t much help if you want a certificate.

You could try the India Office at the British LIbrary. I´ve found them to be very helpful in the past.

Is this the record from the FamilySearch website:?

... if so, then the record has been filmed by the LDS, and you can order a copy of the relevant entry from them for a couple of dollars. Much cheaper than a cert, which even if available, will only have the same info in any case.

                  Thank you Richard

The main reason I want the birth cert is that I can get the mothers maiden name so I can find the marriage between Charles and Alice.

                  What would you recommend?

                    Hi Danny

Even if the GRO can issue a birth cert for this record, it will most likely not have the mother's maiden name I'm afraid. I have ordered several overseas birth "certs" from the GRO and in every case they have turned out to be typed-up extracts from the baptism register. Mine included several from India, though somewhat earlier than this one, i.e. 1870's. None of them have shown the mother's maiden name. There's always an exception, of course - but I suspect that if the mother's maiden name was given in the original document then the LDS would have transcribed it - the fact that they haven't would suggest that it wasn't stated. Still it would be worth getting a copy from the LDS - at least that way you get to see the original handwriting rather than a modern day transcription, and as I said, the cost is considerably less than a GRO cert too.

Probably the only way to get the mother's maiden name is to find the parents marriage, I'm afraid. Do you know what was Charles' occupation? The baptism entry should at least tell you this, which in itself would be worth the $2.

                    Richard

None of my Indian baptisms (1849-1857) showed the mother's maiden name. However, the marriage (by an army chaplain) gave just as much detail as an English one.... age, occupation, father's name, in the case of the bride and witnesses.

The LDS microfilms were luckily readable for my family...some of the original documents were sadly mildewed and almost indecipherable.

                        Hello
I had an email form the British library India stating they found the baptism record but it does not give mothers maiden name so it looks like you were both correct.
I wonder if it would be worth getting it anyway to see if the fathers occupation (should be soldier) would help me find out more about him?
