Both my parents were Veterinary Surgeons. Unusually, my mother qualified as a vet during WWII. There are now three generations of veterinary surgeons in my family - my parents, my brother and my nephew (who is practising at present).
I have a person in a twig on my tree who was practising as a "Veterinary Surgeon" prior to 1840 when he died. The profession has evolved a lot over the years.
This is where my parents studied. It is now part of the University of London and my nephew studied there - 2 years in London, the rest in Hertfordshire, near to where I live.
This gives a potted history of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
My father qualified in 1943, completing his last year of study in ultra-fast time as they wanted to send him to India and Burma as part of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
As the British Army retreated from Burma, I believe that the veterinary surgeons were required to destroy a large number of horses and mules rather than to leave them for the Japanese. This upset my father greatly.Elizabeth
