  • Help for Birmingham South

Can anyone enlighen me, as I am going round in circles, as usual...

I want to know what cemetaries would be under Birmingham South for 1926, as I am searching for a burial for that year?

    Thanks very much.

You might be able to work something out using the descriptions from the list on the BIrmingham City Council website

There seems to be a short description about each cemetery, together with address and dates when they opened.

Thanks - that's great. I have had a look but it doesn't say whether it is for Birmingham n or s. So I will have to check out the boundaries before I proceed.

      Thanks very much,

What area were they living at the time?

There's Kings Norton, Robin Hood - though I don't know how old they are.

It's quite possible they might have been buried in a church graveyard.

Yes, it is possible. I don't know where they were living at the time, unfortunately. I just know the reg district was Birmingham south.

Thanks very much for your help,

Kings Norton didn't open till the 1990s Robinhood opened in 1917.
You could join the Birmingham History Forum where you could ask for an electoral roll look up to find out where in Birmingham they were living.

From my research I have found that Brandwood end or Yardley would be the ones, I think. I could find neither place listed on Genuki, as I thought Birmingham was under Warwickshire. Off the Birmingham.gov site it says for the death reg 1926 that they are for Smethwick, held by Sandwell Register office. That is for the death regs. For the burials Birmingham Central library have the index for burials, so I don't know it that will help my search. It is my first time of delving into the Birmingham archives and it is quite confusing! Thanks very much for your help, much appreciated.

I wouldn't have though either Brandwood or Yardley would have been used by someone in Sandwell. Perhaps Lodge Hill, Handsworth,Witton or even Rowley Regis. None of those I would class as being in South Birmingham though.

I would suggest emailing the most likely if you have the name and date of death.

Eleven cemeteries and three crematoria are situated throughout the city.

Thanks very much for all your help- the help I have received on here has been absolutely fantastic. I have sent off an email so will wait and see if I get a reply and or help/advice.

It is very confusing as it does seem that Brandwood and Yardley would be the ones, but then they are a bit if a way away.

Let's hope I at least can straighten this out, and make sense of it so maybe someone else can go straight to the source rather than wonder where to go to in the future.

                        Thanks very much again,

Guess what? I now have a reply, which is super fantastically fast in my opinion!

The cemetary would be Uplands, I am informed. So I have that at least, which is fantastic. I will investigate further....

Just googled Uplands Cemetary and there's a photo on the CWGC site.

Thanks very much JBee, I have checked this out and it looks very organised and from the pic plenty of headstones. I have tried to see if I can contact the cemetary by email, without any luck.

Great. Checked this out too, and they charge a fee of £25 to manually search the records. Also they don't list Uplands as one of the cemetaries!? Strange....

I must admit its not an area I am familiar with - it maybe that the cemetary is full - wonder if the Sandwell/Smethwick library or local history centre if there is one might have details. Worth a try.

The Sandwell library charges £10 for part of or for full 30 minutes research, but I don't think they have the burials as it doesn't list them. The Sandwell Community and Archive service holds records, but there are at least 3 possible churches for Smethwick. And I presume there was a church service before burial. I didn't realise that this would be so complicated.

Thank you so much for all your help and advice. At least some information as to where to go in future is recorded for others to maybe use.

                                      Best wishes,
