  • Researching KATZ

    Hi everyone,

This name KATZ seems familiar to me, I'm not sure if its from Wendi's tree? I've left a message on both Wendi's posts.

I've been contacted by a person in Toronto who is searching for his Uncle Julius KATZ who was born in Guxhagen Germany in March 1894. It is not known if he made it out of Germany alive.

He converted to Christianity & served as an Evangelical priest. He did marry, but no details known. But, his 2nd wife was Friederike SALZBERG, born in in Wilna in Dec 1895. They married in Berlin on 17th March 1937. It is not known if she was previously married, as she was 42 when she marries Julius Katz in 1937.

Friederike Salzberg of the correct age has been found on a shipping list embarking at Lisbon, Portugal going to England in 1936, the ship came from Argentina. The records indicate that her last country of residence was South Africa. So, he 'thinks' Friederike might have immigrated from Wilma to SA.

Then, in Aug 1948 a Friederike KATZ of the correct age travels from SA to Southampton. Her proposed address in UK was given as; 97, Upper Parliament St Liverpool 8. Liverpool telephone directory lists "J.KATZ" at the same address, likely her husband Julius's initial.

This person has no idea what happened to his Uncle Julius KATZ & is searching for any possible descendants of his.

If WENDi reads this, or if anyone has come across this name or has the KATZ name in their tree please contact me.

    Thanks

I've edited the above post as I now know that the person researching the KATZ family is male (Sorry :-)

I expect he will be joining us soon & will leave him to introduce & explain further once he has found his way around FTF. I've no idea what his username will be as yet so will use his initials. (SK) has explained that he can speak Hebrew & some Yiddish & German, so will probably be as helpful to us as I'm sure we can be to him. I am going to LRO hopefully next week so I'll check electoral rolls for any descendants of this family.

Wendi also has this Katz name in her tree on her father's side, so altho no links are evident as yet, some might emerge later.

I knew I had seen this name somewhere other than Wendi's tree.

SamKa, if you've found your way around the website yet, I have this info from researching Freedman's for my own research, who went to South Africa. Naomiatt (Naomi) found this when we were looking into a Freedman family who went from Dublin to South Africa.

I am in contact with a guy in Tel Aviv & another guy in Melbourne who both have links to two Dublin Freedman families who we are trying to find a link to each other & also to find a link to a Tobias Freedman who died in Dublin in 1902 aged 72. My grandfather's father's name was Tobias Friedman/Freedman & so far, we've found on other Tobias Friedman/Freedman/Freeman in the UK other than this one in Dublin who could fit as far as being the right age.

      ----------
      C&P'd

Marcus Aaron Freedman (died 1942 in Jo'burg) on FTJP -
Father Dan - son called Toby (became a Doctor)
Aaron Marcus below - they went to South Africa - the only
difference is that the birthplace on the FTJP info is saying
Riga....I'd contacted three people this afternoon on JGFF and one
of them is the person who put up the info on FTJP.

According to the info, Dan had three children -
Brother 1 - Marcus Aaron as above married Ida Dora Blum - three children
      Toby (c.1898 Dublin), Gittel/Gertie (1904 Dublin-1992 Jo'burg) and
      Bernard/Berel born 1909 in Bloemfontein died 1954, Jo'burg.
Brother 2 - No name - with children Sam Katz (Freedman) and Libby Katz (Freedman) -
Sam died in Israel in 2001
Brother 3 - No name - child Banas Freedman - no more info

      ------------

PS. We also now know that one of the descendants of this family later became the mayor of Johannesburg.

Any other info you can give us here would help Sanka. There seems to be a lot of coincidences here with names & South Africa & Israel as I'm sure you can see.

Hello Samka - while J Katz at the address above seems positive, have you checked Yad Vashem (living memorial to Holocaust victims which also has a database of names which are continually updated) in the meantime..although he converted he could well still appear in records. http://www.yadvashem.org/

To all who tried to help me so far. First of all, thanks so much, then, of course I checked with Yad Vashem, at least for 20 times over 5 years, You can now find him at Yad Vashem but that is because I filled in a Page of Testimony for him but I also told them that he may have not perished that he just disappeared. One year ago I found a Julius Katz buried in Johannesburg S.A. who was married to a lady with a very similar name as my uncle's own wife Friederike Salzberg. I was holding my breath for a long time till someone in Johannesburg was so kind and sent me a photo of the gravestone. Turns out the birthday was about one year off and the name of the father was not Samuel as it should have been. So, here I am, back to square one but hoping to perhaps finding him in Liverpool and maybe descendants too.

            Dear Wallaby
My great aunt was Fanny Friedmann who was born in Frankenwinheim Germany. She Perished in the Holocaust along with her husband Nathan Rosenthal but she is most likely not one you are looking for. I also have a relative in Britain called Elisbeth Freeman married to Sean Lusk but she is not likely to be one you are looking for either.

              Hi Sam,

Ok, all this info helps to build a picture for us. I've heard back from one of the guy's who lives in Tel Aviv & has connections to the Dublin Freedman family who have a link to Katz & South Africa. He knows very little about the Katz family, but has sent this following info. I have also emailed this to you.

Quote: "Family Katz :Sam and Libby Freedman (Father Israel) adopted by Katz family, therefore no Katz relatives - I have no details of the Katz family who adopted them. Sam came to Israel as a pensioner having lived all his life in South Africa." Unquote.

Does this help ? This explains why Sam & Libby Freedman became Sam & Libby Katz at least.

Sam, if you want to reply to a particular post, which you might want to do when you get a few posts together, then just click on "Reply with Quote" instead of "Reply". & it quotes the post you're replying to, as I've done here. You'll get the hang of it.

                    Hi Naomi,

I'm trying to get down to the LRO new place one day this week. Interestingly, I've just been looking at my facts & reference thread at Cohen's electoral rolls & found this on Naturalised Cohen's from I think it as Jacky who put this list together. Notice the David Cohen***

I went to the Liverpool Records Office today & it was a wasted journey. They closed down a few weeks ago for a 2 year refurbishment & they are operating in a temporary place in the museum, which is the building next door to Liverpool's Central Library. The information on their website is misleading & when I arrived there was a queue of people all lined up complaining because the temporary home for the LRO, as it is known here, is not ready yet & they don't think it will be ready for a few weeks! I've been advised to try again at the end of next week!

So Samka, if you read this I've not forgotten to look up your Katz family in Liverpool's electoral rolls.

PS. There's an Adolph Katz too... Friederike must have had some reason to come to Liverpool from SA. Maybe Julius had family connections already here.

SAMKA.... do you know of any other family connections in Liverpool ? Any reason why Friederike chose Liverpool to move from South Africa too ?

                                      We should never forget them,
Because we would not be here today, but for them.
We should be proud, reflect, respect and always remember them.
                                      Because we all have them…
                                      Them… were our Ancestors.
