  • Where next for a RN sailor who "Ran" in Dec 1828?

I have been following one of OH's ancestors (James WHITEHEAD, b early 1800 in York, bap Apr 1800 in Portsea, joined RN from Malta in 1822, m Portsea in 1825) through his naval career, and he disappears in December 1828, being marked as "Run from Ramillies Dec 1828".

I had a look at the Ship's Log and the Captain's Log for HMS Ramillies, but there's no reference to any sailors having "run" in those. There's only the remarks in the Pay/Muster books which say he ran while on duty in Shorncliffe (near Folkestone, for those who don't recognise the name).

Is this a "brick wall", or am I likely to find any more traces of him? If so, where should I look?

    • I have tried the C19th BL Newspapers, and the Times Digital Archive, in case there were any reports there, but nothing shows up.
    • I intend to look at the RN court martial documents for the following year. There doesn't seem to be any name-index for those.

My understanding is that punishment would be extremely severe if he'd got caught.

    Any ideas would be welcomed.
