My great uncle Robert Skilling was killed in action in France in October 1914. Can anyone tell me if death certificates were issued for people killed in the war, and if so who issued them. Robert Skilling was born in Scotland abut enlisted in Clitheroe, Lancashire. does this make a difference.

There is an entry in the overseas BMDs for
Robert Skilling
No. 5973
Unit. S.Gds
Reference:
War deaths 1914-1921 (Army) database
Year - 1914
Volume - G2
page - 78
If this is the right one then you can order it from the General Register Office, selecting Overseas certificate on the first page.
For info: Overseas BMD index is free to view on Family Relatives website. Also available on Findmypast (pay per view or subscription)Elaine

I take it you've already found him on the CWGC site?
He was the son of Janet and Benjamin, and served with the Scots Guards:
De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour has the same information (but no parents' names):
According to "Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919", he was born in Dalbeattie, Kirkudbright:
You can find his medal card here:
His service record doesn't seem to be online, but very few service records of soldiers KIA seem to be.
This site has foreign death certs for some men killed in WW1 (I found the French death cert of my great-uncle who was killed in France), but Robert doesn't seem to be there. Not sure if there are any more records still to be uploaded.

The best if you can get hold of it is the foreign death cert which, as I said, I found on BMDRegisters for my great-uncle. This was issued (2 months after the death) by the French civil registration authority, and gave his name, regiment, date and place of birth, home address, parents' names, place and time of death, and names of informants (both civilians, so maybe officials of some kind rather than eye witnesses).
This uncle was an officer, and the site doesn't have the death cert of my other great-uncle, who wasn't, so maybe it only includes officers' records.

They do have some certificates for NCO's (not oficers). I ordered three from the GRO quoting the references from the overseas records, 2 certificates arrived ok but 1 they said they had no trace of. All they could say was try the CWGC site and sent me a black and white copy of what I'd already found there. Kept half my money I'd sent for that certificate too.Daphne
Looking for Northey, Goodfellow, Jobes, Heal, Lilburn, Curry, Gay, Carpenter, Johns, Harris, Vigus from Cornwall, Somerset, Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland, USA, Australia.
