With a mixture of fee based and free classes there are literally hundreds of online courses to teach almost every aspect of genealogical research. Some classes take no more involvement than watching a one or two minute video online, others are full-blown university courses with a syllabus, books and graded assignments that can take months to complete. In any case, there is no excuse for ignorance. If you don't have time to do it right, you don't have time to do it.
I took a number of classes from Brigham Young University in their History Department. The classes were taught by professors at the University and were in every way university level courses. I found the classes to be immensely useful in learning the fundamentals of family history. From the BYU site, here is a list of links to educational materials and classes online:
