Opening email attachments

In the last few days my OH has been unable to open most email attachments on his laptop. He uses BTYahoo webmail, IE8, and XPSP3.

Previously he was able to open any attachments (eg .doc; .pdf; etc) but now the download window just hangs there trying to open the item but failing.

If he does it on my computer (same internet connection, same specs) it is fine. So, clearly it is something specific to his laptop.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong?

Ah, well. No luck in any queries we tried, so he downloaded Firefox and ....... his webmail seems to be fine in that browser. Looks like one of computing's little mysteries that are sent to try us and waste HOURS of our time!
