  • Had a brief visit to TNA today...

... I had an appointment in Camden by 4:30pm, so couldn't afford to stay very long, but I did find one useful snippet which throws up a new line on one of OH's Gx3-g-fathers.

The is the one who married 3 Feb 1825, at St Marys, Portsea and was "of HMS Victory". I'd managed to work backwards via HMS Medina and HMS Redpole to "volunteering" (perhaps!) from Malta 1 Jan 1822. Today I tried to find out a bit more to fill in the gap between 13 Mar 1826 on HMS Victory, earning prize money, and 2 Feb 1843, when his 1825 wife got married again.

I looked at the HMS Victory muster covering early 1827, and found his entry marked as "Run from Ramillies Dec 1828".

So next trip, I'll be looking at the records for HMS Ramillies, to see if there's anything there to find. The thick plottens!

Perhaps we could coordinate, now I'm not tied to regular office hours? Tho' my "free" transport won't last much longer: OH finishes working there in September.

Will have to review OH's timetable once we get more info: there are new health complications that could scuper the whole idea, tho' hopefully not.

Certainly looks like that. It does give me something to chase, which is pleasing. So now I have to work out both why/how/when he travelled from Portsmouth to Malta by 1822, and what happened after Dec 1828, when he jumped ship.

There may well have been - but would he have been able to "volunteer" for the Navy?
