  • Help needed tracing Irish Ancestor

According to a marriage certificate copy, Eliza Wright married Thomas Philpott in Mersham, Kent, England on 12 Oct 1874. The certificate shows that Eliza's father was Richard Wright, a tailor. English census records tell me that Eliza was born in Ireland (no town or County specified) in about 1850. Does anyone have any other information on this Irish family, in particular the name of Eliza's mother?
Tips on how I'd go about tracing her would also be appreciated.
I've tried the Irish Family History Foundation website (http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/) but the closest baptism record seems to be for Elizabeth Wright, baptised in 1854 in Co.Antrim, father Richard Wright. However, the four year date difference seems too great for it to be the correct person. Also, is Eliza short for Elizabeth, or is it generally a name in it's own right?

According to the census of 1911 Eliza states she born in Waterford Portlaw dot know how accurate this would be though

Eliza could well be short for Elizabeth but also for Elisea (Irish verson).

Irish research is very difficult I'm afraid to say. You could try this site http://http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start where they have been adding Irish records recently.

I can't believe I didn't think to try the 1911 census, so many thanks to Wendy for the advise about Eliza being born in Portlaw, Co. Waterford. I've since found reference to a "tailor named Wright" at the Portlaw National School's History of Portlaw webpage http://www.portlawns.com/Pages/history_of_portlaw.htm. The information was apparently provided by Portlaw I.C.A. Local History Group and I'd like to contact them to see what else they know about the Wright family. I've e-mailed Portlaw NS, but if anyone has contact details for this history group, then I'd be very grateful if they could let me know.
Thanks also to "salty" and "margaretmarch" for their tips.

Here are the contact details for the Portlaw I.C.A. Guild: Portlaw Community Directory - Portlaw Guild ICA
Perhaps they can put you in contact with the Local History Group?
