  • Haugham, Sussex

    No, it's not Haugham!

It's Slaugham, Sussex and one of the most mistranscribed villages I've come across in census entries

    ...and it's pronounced "Slaffham".

The sort of error that shouldn't have occurred because they should have had a gazetteer to check places. So frustrating and unnecessary. My gt grandmother's birthplace was mangled as something quite bizarre when it clearly said Cambridge, so it wasn't even an obscure village.

I've also corrected some for Middx which have been transcribed as Mexico. (I like to have something to do while the World Cup's on)

I once counted up - 20 different interpretations of the name of Martock, Somerset, in the 1881 census alone - not just transcribers, but enumerators also. And it has been listed as Martock Som - Martock Somalia, sometimes.
