  • Record Office: Southwark : Mary Clare and Mary Clair

There are two entries on the IGI showing :

    a) Birth of MARY CLARE on 8th November 1811 (baptism 9th February 1812) Saint Saviour, Southwark, with parents JOHN CLARE and LUCY.

    b) Birth of MARY CLAIR on 27th January 1814 (baptism 20th March 1814) Saint Saviour, Southwark, with parents JOHN CLAIR and LUCY.

Are these the same parents with two daughters called Mary ? I have not been able to trace the death of a MARY between late 1811 and early 1814 which might be the reason the name was repeated.

I have also been unable to find a JOHN CLARE / CLAIR marriage to Lucy.

Is there anyone who might be able to help with this ?

I can't find any deaths for the first Mary Clare - have you tried looking on Ancestry under the London records?

In the meantime, in case you need it, one other chld for John and Lucy Clare:

      Name: Sarah Clare
      Gender: Female
      Baptism/Christening Date: 20 Jan 1805

So they were married earlier than we might have thought.
      Baptism/Christening Place: SAINT SAVIOUR,SOUTHWARK,SURREY,ENGLAND
      Birth Date: 26 Nov 1804
      Father's Name: John Clare
      Mother's Name: Lucy
      Mother's Birthplace:

This is the only marriage I can find so far:

        Groom's Name: John Clear
        Bride's Name: Lucy Tyler
        Marriage Date: 05 Feb 1804
Marriage Place: St. Botolph Aldgate, London, England
        Groom's Marital Status: Single
        Bride's Marital Status: Widowed

NB - the bride is a widow

Again, it might be an idea to check on Ancestry.

Many thanks. Sarah Clare was actually a twin with :

          Name: William Clare
          Gender: Male
          Baptism/Christening Date: 20 Jan 1805
          Baptism/Christening Place: SAINT SAVIOUR,SOUTHWARK,SURREY,ENGLAND
          Birth Date: 26 Nov 1804
          Father's Name: John Clare
          Mother's Name: Lucy
          Mother's Birthplace:

Our branch actually came from Thomas Clare who was born about 1810 in Southwark but he is not on IGI and I have not found his birth details. My supposition that his parents were also John & Lucy comes from the fact that on the 1871 census his son (Charles Clare born 1849) was living with Mary Reeves (nee Clare) born 1814 Southwark, Surrey.

              Hi

The 1814 birth shows on the Ancestry LMA records transcribed as Clark but I think it does say Clair.

If you haven't got access to the the record the extra details are, abode - Wood Yard and John's occupation is Labourer

The 1812 record is here http://search.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/...id=&gskw=&cr=1

It doesn't give an address but John is still a labourer.
