  • Help Looking for John Shaw 1851/1861 Census

    Hi
Can anybody help me find a John Shaw B1843c Quernmore,Lancaster.
    On the 1851 & 1861 census.

Found him on all the census records from 1871.
Living with his Wife Catherine & children.
Just can't find him living with his parents.

His father was Thomas Shaw a Baker.
Which I got from John Shaw's marriage cert.
John Shaw married Catherine Cottam in 1865 at Preston.

1871 Census Was living in Rishton, Lancashire
Head John Shaw 27 - Cotton Spinner - Born Quernmore.
Wife Catherine Shaw 27 - Cotton Weaver - Born Preston
Son Thomas Shaw 5 - Born Preston
Son William Shaw 3 - Born Rishton
Daug Sarah Shaw 1 - Born Rishton

    Thanks

I wonder if he is this one in 1851
Begin your discovery today by exploring the world's largest online family history resource!

transcribed on Ancestry as John Shan - stepson to George & Sarah Hayton

George Hayton married Sarah Shaw in Lancaster St Mary in 1848 (Lancs BMD)

There is also a marriage for a Sarah Gill to Thomas Shaw in 1843, also Lancaster St. Mary (Lancs BMD)

There are a couple of Thomas Shaw deaths between 1843 and 1848 in the Lancaster registration district.

You might have to get John's birth certificate to sort it out!

Thanks Elaine could well be John Shan.
As forgot to mention on my 1st post that it said the late Thomas Shaw (Father)
      On John Shaw's marriage cert.

Yes may be best to get John's Birth cert.

Had a look at the Original image of the 1851 census. It does say John Shaw (Step Son).

Just trying to find him on the 1861 living with George & Sarah Hayton

Just found this on Lancashire Online Parish Clerk
Marriage record for George Hayton & Sarah Shaw

Marriage: 26 Apr 1846 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
George Hayton - Stonemason Bachelor of Thurnham street
Sarah Shaw - Widow of Asylum
        Groom's Father: John Hayton, Stonemason
        Bride's Father: George Stephenson, Shoemaker
        Register: Marriages 1845 - 1849, Page 73, Entry 146

Still no luck with the 1861 census so far with John Shaw
living with a George & Sarah Hayton.

Perhaps we are on the wrong track there - because I expected Sarah to be Sarah Hayton, formerly Shaw, maiden name Gill - not Stephenson.

            True Elaine.

Think it's see if I can get his birth certificate.
There is a John Shaw born in Qtr Mar 1844 Lancaster.

            None in 1843 for Lancaster.

not that this helps bu I see that in the 1861 census George and son Joseph are shown as being born in Workington Cumberland where as Sarah has not given a birth place they have a daughter called Sarah born same place. I wonder if John is somewhere stating born in Cumberland

Thanks Wendy. One as look but no sign of him still.
Will order his birth certificate today

Elaine I've just found this so could be on the right track still with Sarah Gill

John Shaw Born 1844 Sub-District Caton,Lancashire. Mother Surname Gill
                Lancashire BMD

Plus could have been married before having the * next to her surname.
On the Lancashire BMD for marriage Sarah Shaw - George Hayton 1846.
