  • Help to find Gale or Thompson

I have an Alan King Gale in the 1901 census age 16 grocers assistant born London with his mom in Aberdare, He next appears as John Alan Thompson at his marriage in Oct 1911 in Carbrook Sheffield to Lilian Weaver of 28 Haverlock Rd Handsworth gives his occupation as photographer. He joined up in 1914 and his service record states that he had served a 7 year apprenticeship at the BSA and he was seconded from the ASC to an engineering firm in Sheffield in 1916.
I have both his parents with their households and his future wife with her family in the 1911 census.

But I can't find him under either name

Mike, might be a silly question but how do you know that Alan King Gale and John Alan Thompson are the same person?

From the living Gale relatives. His father was Charles Samuel Gale who's wife who married to Adelaide Maria King in March 1889 just before the birth of their 4th child in May 1889 and the birth of his son with a Lizzie Harrison in June 1899 who he lived with and had 2 more children, changing his name and the family name to Gale-Vine. On John Alan Thompson's marriage certificate he gives his father as Charles Samuel Thompson the same occupation and forenames as Charles Samuel Gale.

Using the free search on the 1911 census, and putting in and taking out various bits of information, there appears to be a John Thompson born 1880 London, occupation Photographer, living in Cranbrook Yorkshire. Could he be yours?

Cranbrook or Carbrook? The only Cranbrook I know is in Kent.

Sorry, I meant Carbrook. Same place as where he was married.

His age in the census is 31 and his age on the marriage certificate is 30 in the same year and he is a lodger, so it looks like that's him.
So now I must try and disprove it by finding a John Thompson born 1880/1 in Hornsey,London.

              Thanks
