  • Gravestone 1940 London

In 1940, any idea of the cost of a gravestone and how widely available were they at that time in London?

I cannot tell you of the cost of a grave stone in 1940,I think it would depend on the stone and the amount of work involved.
Where I lived in Highgate North London there were several Monumental Masons working at the time, many were too old for 'War service'

The cost would depend on how big it was, what is was made of and how much needed to be engraved on it.
I thought I had info about a gravestone in 1957 in London, but its just the cost of the funeral, including coffin, interment fee, burial service at St. Pancras cemetery and that was £18.00.

Thanks WillG and Little Nell. I was wondering how it worked during WW11...assumed a lot of apprentices would have gone to war, and money would have been tight for a lot of people as well. I tried to find a site that would give a rough pricing indication but couldn't find anything on gravestones...bread, milk etc was easy!
