Canadian Army Query ?

I have the death Cert of a man who was born and died in Canada he was born in 1881 and where it asks if this man was ever in the armed forces it says no , would it not have been compulsory to serve ???

Canada didn't have conscription in the first world war until 1917, when he would have been in his mid 30s so perhaps he was too old, or perhaps he had a "reserved occupation", or he could even have been medically unfit.
