Until the end of May the subscription website, www.footnote.com
is offering free access to its entire newspaper collection. This includes
the run of THE TIMES of London. If you sign up for the "Basic Footnote
Account", and not through the "free trial" link, you will not have to provide a Credit
Card.
You can search the databases without registration but a free registration is
needed to view the images. http://go.footnote.com/newspapers/

I have to say I find it a bit hard to navigate the website, but I believe it's
worth persevering.

Thanks for this. Although I didn't find anything in the free newspapers, I browsed the rest of the collections and found my great-uncle and the name of the silk shop that he ran in Los Angeles in a city directory of 1913, just on the thumbnail it shows in the "quick look".

You're right about the navigation though. I kept having to go back to the beginning and start again!
