  • Harwood/Harrold in Sussex

After a couple of hours looking at Harwoods in parish records for Sutton, Sussex it seems that these names are interchangeable due either to local pronunciation or the quirks of whoever was filling out the register.

eg baptism for Frances 21 Jul 1821 dau of Henry & Elizabeth has HARROLD crossed out and HARWOOD written afterwards. The burial of my ancestor Thomas Harwood 27 Jul 1816 is entered as Harrold.

Hope this helps any other Sussex Harwood researchers.

    Hi Jill

At least living in Sutton for such a long time, our Harwood/Harrolds don't have as many variations as some others !!

Di - I've extracted all the burials 1813-1895 if they are any use to you (and for Leggatt & Neal, my other Sutton folk)
