  • Lawson

I am looking for any descendents of John Lawson who was born 1864 in Sunderland and who married Mary Holmes in 1885 and had 3 children by her.

Tha last child Annie was born around 1893 and after that John seems to have disappeared fromm this earth.

I can't find any trace of death or divorce - strangely Mary Lawson married Charles Rennie in 1902 citing herself as a spinster on the marriage certificate.

    Thanks Lynn

How do we know it was the same Mary Lawson nee Holmes if the 1902 marriage shows her as a spinster? Do you have any trace of who was where in 1901?

1901: Mary says she's married and has a 7 month old child, so she must have a husband somewhere. Her boarders are named Holmes so they may be her brothers.

        17 George Street North, Bishopwearmouth

Mary E Lawson, Head, married, 32, wire winder?, b. Newcastle
        Everyone else is born Sunderland
William Lawson 15, apprentice ship's plater
        John R ditto 11
        Annie ditto 9
        Henrietta R ditto 4
        Charles B R ditto 2
        Frederick R ditto 7 mo.
Robert Holmes, boarder, 20, rivet heater
William Holmes, boarder, 38, gen. lab.

          Lawson

I have the marriage certificate and she has also put her father down as Thomas Lawson but he was called Thomas Holmes a blacksmith - her son Charles Rennie Lawson's birth certificatehas no father on it and I assume the other two children she had after John went also with middle name Rennie would have no father on their birth certs.

The two boarders are her brothers.

            And 1891: RG12 Piece 4147 Folio 68 Page 5

            9 Pilgrim Street Monkwearmouth

Jno. Lawson, 29, coal miner b. Sunderland
            Mary ditto, 22 b. Newcastle
            Wm. ditto, 5 b. Sunderland
Jno. Robt. ditto, 1 b. Sunderland

It's possible John was on shift down the pit when the 1901 census was taken.

She could have left her husband (or vice versa). Bigamy was much cheaper than divorce.

Have you traced John Lawson prior to 1891? If there's any connection to Carlisle there's a family there in 1901:

This John born Newcastle has a sister Fanny born in Carlisle.

John's family came from Quarrington Hill in Co Durham.

His father William moved to Sunderland presumeably to work in the pit at Monkwearmouth.

Thanks for the information so far.
