  • Nottingham puzzle

Robert Boyd Mills is born in Nottingham March quarter 1855. In Jun Q 1873 he presumably marries, I think to Annie Smith. In 1874 Sep Q another Robert Boyd Mills is born in Nottingham. In 1896 there is a further marriage for Robert Boyd Mills in Nottingham.

Can anyone find any trace of any of these Roberts in a census? There is a possible one in 1881, Robert married to Anna but they don't have a son Robert.

    Thanks

    Linda

Have you seen the two deaths LInda?
One appears to be the senior Robert - Sept 1938 Mills Robert B aged 83 Nottingham 7b 223 and one looks as though another son was born and died shortly after - Dec 1908 aged 1 Robert Boyd Mills Nottingham 7b 193.

Thanks Chrissie, I had noted the death of the baby, but hadn't yet tracked down either of the adult Roberts. I may have found Robert jr in 1911 - there is a Robert Mills with wife Ellen and son Ernest aged 18 or 10 and daughter Ethel aged 8 in Nottingham at 114 Kirkwhite Street. Also they have had one baby die which could be Robert Boyd. The length of time of the marriage matches too. Also according to BMD Robert Boyd married Heleanor Elizabeth Twigg, which could be Ellen.

Now if only I could find any of them in 1901!

P.S. as an aside what was the age for starting school in the 1870's -was it 4 or 5?

You're right Linda, it is a puzzle. I have been looking but non of the possibles seems to quite fit. Do you have his birth or marriage cert or anything? If you could find him before marriage it would help to know where he was born. The nearest one in age is born in Sutton Bonnington to William an ag lab.

p.s. No idea about 1870's but I know my father started school when he was 4 and that would be about 1912.

This is all part of a bigger puzzle, part of which i asked about before. On my tree I have a Robert Johnson born ca 1855. However, there is a possibility he may be the son of a previous marriage, and therefore his name may be Robert Mills. I can find Robert Johnson on the 1861 and 1971 census, but that is all. I cannot find a corresponding birth entry for Robert Johnson. So i was wondering, if maybe when he left home he reverted to his real name as against his stepdads name. I was hoping to try and find Robert Mills on the census to see if the professions matched - at age 16 R Johnson was a smith. This whole family is very confusing as Dad, Thomas Johnson married twice, wife 1 had two babies before marriage, so theywere registered under her surname, and wife 2 had been married twice before, and had at least 2 children before.

I think I will get Robert Boyd Sr. birth certificate - that will tell me if I have the right mother.

          Thanks for trying.

Hi Jane, and welcome to the site. Presumably the name you are referring to is Robert Boyd Mills. After a lot more research I managed to track down my Robert, and found that he was not connected to any of the Robert Boyd Mills, so did not go any further with them. It was definitely a very complicated set up, with my lot seemingly flitting all over Nottinghamshire to have babies. If however, you are researching any of the other names, I would love to exchange info with you.

              Thanks
              Linda
