  • 1851 help needed to find Edward Lavin and family

I now know the family below in the 1841 census is the right one but cannot find any of them in the 1851 census. With sp variations, I use an asterisk at least in place of the i in the name Lavin.

1841 All b Ireland except two youngest. All children cotton piecers except 2 youngest:

Head: Edward Lavin 38 b1803 Male Servant.
    Wife: Marg(a)ret 30 b1811
    John 13 b 1828
    Darby 15 b 1826
    Mary 15 b 1826
    Peter 10 b 1831 Cheshire
    Edward 2 b 1839 Cheshire

Booth St. Civil par: Stockport. Hundred: Macclesfield Cheshire
Reg district: Ashton under Lyne. Sub-reg district: Dukinfield.

The only bap I can find is on IGI for youngest child:

IGI extracted Batch No C395338 - Brother, Edward Lavin birth: 28/10/1837 Chr: 1/12/1850 Ashton Under Lyne, Lancs.
    Parents: Edward & Margaret Lavin.
    Doesn’t give Church.

On Hugh Wallis Batch Nos website, that batch number is one off for chr at St Michael's - have checked all the chr on there and no relevant Lavins. They could have been a Catholic family.

John - I found only one entry for 1851:
John Lavin b1829 ? Crofmolina, Ireland.
    Private at Budock, Cornwall.

By 1861 the son John has married Ann and is living in Sculcoates, Hull, Yorks. He is my interest. He gives his birthplace in 1861 as Staleybridge, Cheshire. His daughter married in a Catholic church although he didn't.

Checked BMD death for family in 1841:

1.? Fa or son: Edward Laven: 3/1849 Stockport, Cheshire

    2. Son Darbey? Darvey Laven: 3/1845 Ashton Under Lyne, Cheshire, Lancs.

Perhaps John's family moved to Hull as he married there in 1853.

Grateful for anyone who can take a look at this. Will have another go now myself.

A bit of a long shot Liz but there is a marriage for a Mary Lavin in Ashton under Lyne Sept 1850 20 67. I can't find her in 1851 under any of the other names listed apart from this possible, if her name was Mary Jane (Though it's only Mary on the marriage ref). Might just be worth hanging onto as a slight possible though.

p.s. I think I would ignore that one. There are SO many possibilities for a married Mary. I wish I had time to check for all the possible marriages.

Thanks for having a look at it, Chrissie. I have found a marriage:

BMD Marriage ? Peter Lavin Jul q 1850 Leigh Greater Manchester, Lancs

Lancs BMD Marriage to Alice Hampson Leigh R O/Registrar Attended.
      Wigan & Leigh ROL/2/185.

Can't find him after that although there were Lavin births reg after 1850 for Lavin on Lancs BMD. Can't find him in census.

Will save yours but with such common names, reckon I can't go much further. The sp variations are wonderful too...

Chrissie found that Mary Lavin marriage on Cheshire BMD:

1850: Mary Lavin to George Fleming Ashton under Lyne Civil Marriage Tameside RM/7/27.

Found this one in 1851 living with a Levin family in Ashton U. Lyne but not my family. They are described as lodgers so probably relatives. Could still be Mary from my family but hard to prove.

Also this one: Cheshire BMD Marriage 1849 Mary to James McGuckin Stockport Civil Marriage Stockport STR/4/93.

There were so many Irish Lavins in that area around that time, probably mainly Catholic and naming daughters Mary that probably won't be able to verify without certs.

Just done an open search on Cheshire BMD death for Lavins and clarification of age of Edward quoted above in BMD death 1849. Probably not any of my Edwards as birth year out by a lot for the father:

Cheshire BMD death: 1849 Edward Levin aged 51, making birth year 1788 reg Stockport First Stockport ST1/19/1

Cheshire BMD death: Davey Laven aged 22, making birth year 1823, Hartshead Tameside HAR/8/19. Think this must be the one referred to in my first post. Only one showing. Not mine.

Thanks angelina - will have another look at that.

Thanks Alan. I've done an open search for the name in Sculcoates, Hull in 1851 census but don't appear to be there then. Will have a go at your suggestion when I have some more mental energy...I am all Lavined out for the moment!
