  • Detective needed to find Francis McCusker in 1881, please

Francis McCusker was born about 1860 in Killererin, Galway, Ireland.

I found him in the army records in find my past and, from them, it looks as if he should be in Alderney, but the only one I can find with a surname anything like his is Francis Mc Clusken in Sunderland! (RG number: RG11 Piece: 5001 Folio: 24 Page: 41). Also, although I went backwards and forwards from the image with his name, I could not see the regiment.

His surname does vary, in his marriage record in 1885 it is Mclusker though he signed it McCusker. Not easy for the English to understand the Irish accent sometimes, I expect. I have found him and his wife from 1891 to 1911.

I had a look at the record view and it doesn't say anything other than Barracks. You might try googling Sunderland Barracks 1881 and see what comes up or find a military site that might know who was stationed there at the time.

Just had a look on Family search but it just says "Barracks" barrack Road.

I wonder if it is worth finding out about one of the higher ranked officers that are with him on the 1891 or 1871 census and see if you can find out that way.

Might be long winded and they night not be in the country even.

        Thank you for your replies.

I have done a lot of searching, and still am and am going round in circles

I think that whichever regiment he was in was amalgamating with another that year, maybe the Royal Irish Fusiliers, not sure though. He enlisted in 1879, the 68th Brigade at Galway, when he was 19.

On that census list 1881 of soldiers at the barracks, the captain was Charles Talbot Peyton, looked him up

Charles Talbot Peyton (Durham light infantry)
Promoted Captain 106th Regiment, October, 1877, from Lieutenant, 10th Regiment, for services in the Perak campaign. Served in the Soudan in the engagement at Giniss. Commanded 2nd Battalion, August, 1890 to 1894. Colonel, half-pay in 1900.

Just read your other post about Alderney

I found the military in Alderney, but it looks bleak, they just listed how many!!! If he is among them, that will be why you cant find him.

Thank you for all your searching, very kind of you.

I am not subscribed to ancestry so can't see that.

I think that I shall make a note that it might have been him, there again, maybe not

I like to tie up loose ends, if at all possible - in this site http://user.itl.net/~glen/aldarmy.html there are the British Regiments that were in Alderney, and at the time of the 1881 census (just) was the 87th 1st Bn Royal Irish Fusiliers 7.1880 - 4.1881

Well then thats done and dusted, I suppose the enumerator and administrators didnt fancy writing out a few hundred names, so just did a head count.
