  • Fear God - Honour the King. North Leigh help please

A certificate gained at Sunday School has come to light and might be my only hope of tracing this family.

Dated December 6th 1863 it says - this is to certify that Elizabeth Sophia Davis was a scholar in the National and Sunday School. North Leigh.
    signed Robt. W Fiske, Vicar.

As far as I can make out Elizabeth Sophia Davis' parents were William and Sophia Davis.

If this is the Elizabeth I am searching for - it pushes her date of birth back by about 20 years!! I am wondering if the certificate is her mother? I have no information on this family how or when they came to Australia.

If anyone could find any trace of the family I would be grateful and/or any information about the church this vicar belonged to.

What was the National and Sunday School scheme? How old (or young) would the scholars have been?

    Thank you,
    Vonny

In the later 19th century there was an Anglican revival: under Robert Fiske, 1862-83, the church was restored, the number of communicants trebled to c. 60, children's catechism classes flourished, and a Bible reading group for adults was established.

So it was the C of E church.

This is probably her birth (age 13 is about right for confirmation classes):

      Births Dec 1850
Davis Elizabeth Sophia Witney 16 138

North Leigh is in the Witney registration district.

Found her in the 1861 census with parents John and Elizabeth:

        Class: RG9; Piece: 904; Folio: 95; Page: 17

          Mary,

thank you. Although your information throws up many problems - she is way too old to be the one I am looking for!

My Elizabeth Sophia Davis got married in 1909 and died in 1951.
Photos seem to show her as mid to late 20's.

Her husband, George Thomas Barker was 28 when they married

On reflection - I bet this Elizabeth Sophia is the GRANDMOTHER!!

I have photos - unnamed - but no camera at the moment.
Will have to wait till this evening when hubby brings camera home
and i will put them up.

More reflection: Can't be the grandmother because the surname is the same.
An Aunt? any other siblings with John and Elizabeth (like a William?)
Sorry - i can't access the 1861 census only the free one.

Do you have your Elizabeth's death cert? What age and birthplace does it give? How long had she been in Aus?

                Bless you Mary

I'm only just getting to this family having looked at an album of unnamed and unmarked photos
yesterday. I had the info on Elizabeth's marriage but was following her husbands line (my husband's line)
                and had ignored her.

I will get her death cert now I am interested in her.

She also left a LARGE collection of post cards with fascinating insights into her courtship and marriage.

Some of the photos come from London, some from N Z and some from Sydney.

This is the only other likely birth in Oxfordshire:

                  Births Jun 1871
Davis Elizabeth Sophia Witney 3a 677

William (parents Elizabeth and John) could be my Elizabeths father. but why would he have his sister's Sunday School certificate in Australia??

next piece of information - just need to ask OH the right question!!!!!

From a book he dug out of our library - Elizabeth Sophia Davis.
presented to her by her mother on 18th August 1890 being the 11th anniversary of her Birthday.

In other words, she was born on 18th August 1879 so the Sunday School card couldn't have belonged to her.

There's no Elizabeth Davis or Davies with any middle name born in the 3rd quarter of 1879 in Oxfordshire.

These are the only Elizabeth Sophias in England and Wales born in that quarter:

                        Births Sep 1879
                        Bamfield Elizabeth Sophia S Barton R 6a 188
Fielder Elizabeth Sophia Fulham 1a 205
French Elizabeth Sophia Christchurch 2b 643
Lancashire Elizabeth Sophia Ashton 8d 523
Lewis Elizabeth Sophia Lambeth 1d 424
Procter Elizabeth Sophia Birmingham 6d 77

and these are the only Elizabeths born in Witney RD during that quarter:

                        Births Sep 1879
Tanner Elizabeth Annie Witney 3a 741
Wright Elizabeth Harriet Witney 3a 744

Do you have her marriage cert to George? Maybe she'd been married previously?

                          Thank you Mary.

I'll get the death certificate before I go any further.
Trouble is, there were no children and her husband pre-deceased her so
I'm not going to be entirely confident of the info!! but it will be a start.

Will get back to you once I have the cert or any other significant information comes to light.

Maybe the information on the marriage cert would be more reliable, as the information would have come from her? It should give her age, birthplace and parents' names.
