  • Coroner and death certifcates

My brother died last November and his death was referred to the coroner. I was searching for a death and suddenly thought about my brother last night. I have an interim certificate and we are still waiting for the coroner's final hearing. Am I right in assuming the interim certificate is replaced after the hearing giving the actual cause of death and registered under the original quarter?

    Many thanks

I would imagine (cautiously!) that you are right, as an interim death certificate has no legal standing, but is issued "as a courtesy to family and friends to enable funeral arrangements to be made and for financial matters to be resolved in case of hardship".

I am sorry for your loss.

I think you're partly right. Once the coroner is satisfied, he/she will notify the registrar and a full death certificate can be issued. However the GRO indexes are (I believe) for the quarter that the registration took place rather than the date of death itself (in much the same way that a birth can appear in a later quarter, depending on when it was registered.)
