  • Who was Allise?

In my ggg grandmother's letter to her husband & children, she makes repeated references to "Alisse", who she referred to as my gg grandfather George's cousin. Can anyone help me to identify who Alisse was please.
Agnes Smith (nee Weatherstone) had a brother Benjamin, that we know of, she mentions him in her letter but he was unable to visit her in Kelso, so she is clearly staying with another relative. According to the IGI, Benjamin had siblings James & Jessie & the 1841 shows a sister Mary, who I believe is mentioned in the letter as May, but deceased. There is also a possible brother Nichol/Nickel who was witness at Benjamin's marriage.
The letter is written on paper headed Kelso, Scotland, so that would appear to be where she was staying & I have been able to date it as being between 1867, when her youngest son Benjamin (also mentioned in the letter) was born & 1877 when Agnes herself died.

Can anyone help to identify Alisse please?

Sorry, George was a Smith but his father's family was from Louth in Lincolnshire, it was Agnes' Weatherstone family who came from the Scottish borders.
Just to add Mary was c1818 James c1819, Jessie c1821 Benjamin c1824 & Agnes c1826

Perhaps you give a census reference for the family in 1841? It could make it easier to find out more info.
        Thanks

I don't actually have the census reference & don't have an ancestry sub at the moment. In 1841 Agnes age 15 was living in Hume Scotland with Thomas age 45, Mary age 20 both ag labs & Benjamin aged 17 a gardener. The IGI has Benjamin as being the son of Agnes Johnston & Thomas Weatherstone (Stitchil) & there are also baptisms for a James & Jessie (Roxburgh). In 1851 Mary is a visitor in Hume of the Briggs family who were the family's neighbours in 1841 Her place of birth is given as Eccles, which is where Thomas & Agnes were married in 1813

That is lovely Elaine, many thanks. I had looked previously for marriages for Jessie prior to 1841, so there may be one after. the fact that James was living with a Nichol Weatherstone suggests they are related & perhaps brothers As Nichol is living in Kelso, perhaps it Allise belongs to his family

Looking through my records, I do have the Nichol & Elspeth family in 1851, could someone give me the details for 1861 please, I can see them on Ancestry but can't access the details. In 1851, they additionally have a daughter Elspeth who may well have been Alisse.
I have also found a Mary Weatherton in Roxburghshire in 1871, if it would be at all possible to have those details.
                  I really appreciate the help

Thanks Elaine, I notice that the Elspeth who was with them in1851 is no longer there, although there is an Elizabeth who could feasibly be an Alisse. I can't see the family in 1871, can you?
The Mary I was looking for would have been older & single, so not the right one sadly but they could well be related.

Argh, I didn't want him to come to Engalnd! He needed to have died in Scotland, so that his death cert would give his parent's names & then I could confirm if he was Agnes' brother!. Thank you very much for that Elaine

Think I've found them in 1881, as Nicholas & Elizabeth still in Bamburgh. If they were living in Bamburgh during that period, then it is unlikely that Agnes would have been staying with them, as she was in Kelso.

How nice Ancestry actually let me see the details of this one, they are living with sons William & James & Henry & Jane who are now grand children

Sorry to keep asking, but I might have found a lead on Jessie Weatherston. I have found a marriage for her on the igi in 1847 to Richard Wanless in Greenlaw Roxburghshire which is in the right area. I have found them in 1851 on Ancestry, would sks tell me the details please?
