  • Can anyone identify the name of the castle in this letter please?

My newly found cousin has given me a copy of a letter from my ggg grandmother to her husband & children. On the last page, she mentions that "Allise and me (h)is going away to see ? castle & the gardens". Can anyone identify the name of the castle please? She was staying in or around Kelso in the Scottish borders at the time, so I would expect it to be somewhere around there.

    Many thanks

    Lynn

      Floors Castle

Set in the beautiful surrounds of the Scottish Borders, the SCHLOSS Roxburghe Hotel, with its championship golf course, is the perfect getaway destination…

Could it be the castle at Roxburgh, perhaps??

Wow, thanks, Floors sounds good, I had read it as Flavis, although her writing is very hard to read.

This extract from David Ogilvys' Roads may be of interest. Fleurs is shown as 344 miles from Shoreditch.
The book was published in 1804.

That is interesting Roger, thanks. the Duke of Roxburgh was obviously quite wealthy.

Though the town of Roxburgh itself is now a "deserted village" which was excavated by Time Team a few years ago. It fizzled out several hundred years ago after Berwick moved into England and there was no river access from Scotland to the sea.

Floors Castle and Gardens are well worth a visit even today. They would have been an excellent day out from Kelso.

The castle & gardens sound like an interesting place to visit if I should ever manage to get up that way again.
