  • Are Hanna and Agnes Pickup the same person in Lower Darwen, Lancs - help needed

Am I safe making this connection – any help would be appreciated as my brain is scrambled with these Pickups in Lower Darwen.

Am trying to ascertain if Joseph’s wife Hanna in 1841 is in fact also called Agnes in 1851. Lower Darwen is now part of Blackburn & Darwen. A lot of the Lower Darwen families used St Mary the Virgin Blackburn for Baps, Marriages etc. Their reg district was Blackburn. Because of variation of spelling, I search Ancestry with wild card: Pic**p.

? Birth: Ancestry Chr: Joseph Pickup Birth: 29/9/1811 Chr: 19/10/1811 Blackburn. Parents: William & Jane Pickup. Not on OPC St Mary Baps.

IGI search for Marriages of Joseph: nil apart from with Agnes Aspden.

OPC: Marriage: 7/4/1833 St Mary, Blackburn
Joseph Pickup - weaver, bachelor of this parish
AgnesAspden - spinster of this parish.

IGI/Ancestry Chr: No Hannah Aspden but:

IGI: Agnes Aspden: Birth: 18/10/1812 Chr: 27/12/1812 St Mary-The-Virgin, Blackburn. Parents: John & Jane Aspden

Death: Agnes/Hanna has died by 3/1851. Not in OPC burials St Mary, Blackburn.

Ancestry open search for Agnes Pickup in 1841 census: nil.

IGI/BMD death for Hanna – nil.

Lancs BMD Death index: 1850 Agnes Pickup b1809 death reg Darwen, Blackburn

Children: None on OPC Baps, St Mary, Blackburn.

Lancs BMD Birth index, reg Darwen Blackburn, surname Pickup, up to 1851:

1843 Mary Mo’s maiden name: Aspdin (same as 1851 census)
    1846 John Mo's maiden name: Aspden (1851census – b 1845)
1840 Jane Mo's maiden name: Aspden
    (1851 census – b1841, 1841 census - b1840)

IGI: 1839 Sarah Birth: 3/12/1837 Chr: 21/12/1837 St Paul, Blackburn
    Parents: Joseph & Agnes Pickup (1851 census - b 1839)

Census - I cannot find a Joseph and Agnes anywhere in Lancs in 1841 census.
Not many Joseph Pickups in 1841 and only one in Darwen is:

1841 Joseph Pickup b1816 (all b Lancs.) Collier
Hanna 25 Weaver (it clearly says Hanna on image)
    William b1836
    Sarah b1838
    Jane b1840 (6 Months)

Little Lane. Civil par: Blackburn. Hundred: Blackburn (Lwr Division).
Sub-reg district: Darwen. (NB Spew Spout starts on this page)

If above was same family as below, where was Betty 1836 in 1841?

1851 Head: Joseph Pickup 39 b1812 Lwr Darwen. Widower. Labourer.
    (transcribed Picop)
Children - all b Lower Darwen:
    William b1834 Drawer of coals
Betty b1836 Tenter of power looms
Sarah b1839 Tenter of power looms
    Jane 10 b1841 ? of power looms
    Mary 8 b1843 Scholar
    John 6 b1845 Scholar
    Alice 3 b1847

Sudell Nook Civil par: Lwr Darwen
Ecc par: St James Sub-reg district: Darwen

Looks like Joseph remarries a Betty Taylor by 1861 and none of his children with him. Have researched Betty's family and his children but no clues there.

Sorry this is so long. Grateful for your thoughts. Might have to settle that will never know on this one.

As over 45 people have looked at this and there are no replies, I take it that no-one can offer any thoughts on this.

Hi - there seems to be quite a few Agnes, Hannah's or Betty's with that surname in Blackburn..
Have you had a look at the Aspden line?

Hi Naomi...there are loads of Pickups in Blackburn but wanting to concentrate on the Lower Darwen ones. Thanks for the suggestion of following the Aspdens - have also tried that just now but can't link.

Thanks for replying. Will close thread now as I think it is impossible

I posted a reply to this thread - where's it gone?!

(Only to say I couldn't help - thought I could, but turned out to be a different Pickup/Aspden combo, sorry)

If you don't have any of the three birth certificates you mention, surely the thing to do is to buy one (at least!) and check the mother's first name. Also the death certificate for Agnes (should say wife of ......). I know it means money, but that should help you decide whether you are making the right connections or not.
