Blue screen message re my portable hard drive

Can anyone tell me please what might be causing this problem? I have a portable hard drive which I have had for a couple of years. It used to always come up under 'My computer' as hard disc drive (E) and I used to keep it plugged in a lot of the time with no problems. One day I plugged it in and instead of coming up as (E) it suddenly started to come up as (G). Ever since then, if I leave it plugged in when I switch off I get a blue screen the next time I log in and have to wait while it 'checks' the drive. It says there is a fault and had to shut down to save me from losing work etc. I'm not sure but I think there may be a few things gone missing from it, but whether they have or not, what could be causing this please and am I in danger of losing my work i.e. photo, genealogy etc.

I have a new hard drive which I am in the process of moving my work on to but I want to sort it first and get rid of a lot of rubbish and not just transfer it willy nilly.
