  • Census looks up for Oswaldtwistle, Lancs...Pickup

Just had a breakthrough in my friend's tree research in that I looked again at 1851 census image I had saved and 2 of the grandchildren's names wrongly transcribed as Ackerly not Pickup.

My Ancestry subs have elapsed - can you help me track Joseph Pickup born about 1846 either Oswaldtwistle or Lower Darwen, Lancs?

Here he is in 1851 with Townley grandparents and I assume his siblings:

1851 (edited) Head: John Townley b1795 Tockholes. Coal Miner.
    Spouse: Betty b1797 Livesey.
    Grandchildren – all born Oswaldtwistle:

    William Pickup 7 b1844
    Joseph “ 5 born 1846
    James “ 2 b1849 Lwr Darwen

? Alleytroyds Village, Church. Civil parish/sub-reg district: Oswaldtwistle. Ecc par: Emanuel.
    Reg district: Blackburn.

I have found a Joseph Pickup but born Lower Darwen in 1881:

Joseph Pickup 35 b1846 Lower Darwen. Head. Earthenware Labourer.
    Spouse: Ann 33
    Dau: Jane Alice 3

3 Whitecroft Estate Civil parish: Oswaldtwistle

Lancs BMD Marriage: ? 1868 Joseph Pickup to Ann Tomlinson at Oswaldtwistle, Immanuel

So, if this is right man, should be with wife Ann in 1871 and single in 1861.

If you are not familiar with this area, there are a lot of Pickups...OC will understand.

Would you please look him up in 1861, 71, 91 and 1901. My primary interest is his brother, William.

Cannot find Joseph on IGI. Many thanks.

      Liz I've p.m you. I've found Joseph Pickup with Ann in 1871,91 & 1901.

I have found a 1861 census with a Joseph Pickup age 14. Living in Lower Darwen.
      With his parents.
Head - William Pickup Born in Lower Darwen.
Wife - Jane Pickup Born in Church
Also a few siblings of Joseph's.

Not sure if that could be the right one.

Sharon...the parents' names are right. Lower Darwen and Oswaldtwistle are close and the Pickups and Townleys were in both I think. On son William b1844 Marriage Cert, his father is William and doesn't say deceased.

Think you might have cracked this one...have mailed you.
